Travel in Europe with Two Not Young Adults and a Young Adult

| We're going to Europe with our nephew this summer and are very excited! But we don't have kids ourselves so we are diving head first into making arrangements for a party of three for the first time. We'll be visiting Munich, Prague, and Budapest. I'm thinking that hotels with room for 3 (we are comfortable enough to share a single space) are going to be a non starter. We will be generous on the trip but we are not "taking him" on the trip (meeting him after summer studies) so I want to be very sensitive to his pricing expectations and don't want to set up a situation where he's paying for a hotel room on his own. We will have an honest conversation with him about his expectations of course (maybe he wants to stay in a hostel and meet us during the day?) But, I'm thinking that maybe a VRBO or the equivalent is the way to go (in which case, we would pay for the accommodations). Any thoughts or first hand experiences from parents who have slowly gotten to this point? |

| Side note from the OP: I haven't taken an overnight train since I was 21. I can't wait to see this travel through his eyes with him. I'm going to be all kinds of nostalgic and happy for a higher budget on other trips on an overnight train from Prague to Budapest! |

| You can find hotel rooms for 3. It is a bit harder to find but very doable. |

| I would look for 2 bedroom airbnbs. I have found airbnbs in Europe to still be a good value. (Not so much in the US anymore). |

It will also depend on your comfort level. The larger bed is normally not king sized, and often isn’t even a queen, but a double. In one hotel I stayed at last summer (and it was a Hilton), our room was one that had had a king bed that they just pulled apart by about six inches to make two beds. In a different hotel the two beds were doubles, but since it was just me and my child it was fine. Not sure how comfortably I would have slept with my spouse also in the bed. You never know what you’re going to get. |

+1. The larger hotels might have several different room configurations. Expedia makes it fairly easy to thumb through the different room types, even if you don't eventually reserve through them. |

| Don't know if this is still the case but it used to be that many hostels in Europe would have a couple of private rooms plus dorm-style accommodation. You could get a private room for you and spouse and he could go into a dorm. |

| We just traveled through Europe with a married couple and another adult and had no trouble finding ample hotel room choices that slept three. We prefer hotels so air bnbs did not appeal. |

When our family of 4 travels to Europe we stay in family rooms. But they fill up quickly because the hotels that have them only have a few. So OP make sure you book lodging early. |

| I would pay for his own room, simply because I would rather be in a comfortable hotel in my own room. |
