2024 College Graduates, how’s the job market?

Especially CS major? DC wants to do cs, but we heard some bad news from friends’ kids. Don’t know pervasive?

4 years is a long time. Job market may be different in 4 years when a freshman graduates from college.

This. And AI is going to change a lot of job sectors in ways that aren’t really predictable right now.

Following. Finance, accounting.

Agree 4 yrs from now that the job market may vary.

A plumber yesterday told me they charge $420 per hour. I was shocked inflation drove plumbing service to $420 per hour! Now how many college majors offer $420 per hour, even ten years post-graduation? And the icing on the cake is AI will not replace residential plumbing maintenance jobs!

Earlier this week, I had a plumber snake a clogged kitchen sink drain - he charged $350 for 35 minutes of effort!

That isn’t inflation. That’s supply and demand. Inflation is the slow grind of higher input costs. Supply and demand is when plumbers have figured out that the UMC are flush with money and the UMC would rather throw money at problems than fix them themselves. But, there aren’t a lot of plumbers around these highly educated, HCOL neighborhoods, so the plumbers who exist decide to charge a lot. Why? Because they can. Because demand for their service and the willingness and ability to pay for it far exceeds the number of people who do the work.

I spent $1100 today for 5 hours of work bc the main drain was backed up and the drain needed to be snaked 70 feet. Ugh- but that man worked his butt off.

T10, CS and all majors getting hired no problem.

Friend's kid at VT struggling and says job market prospects down for their senior friends in tech. The other kid from Longwood has been looking for 2 yrs , some sort of programming major

Good to have CS and entrepreneurship and something soft skill (communications, English) - highly in demand if you can do all.

Plumbers don’t cost anything close to that in Bethesda. I just had one install a toilet and vanity which took about 3 hours and it was $500.

Actually, AI may at least start impacting certain aspects of trades. A/C units are now coming with sensors that provide diagnostics so you will know months in advance if your system is encountering problems and will reduce the need for annual servicing and emergency situations.

There are similar sensors on water pipes installed in commercial buildings to alert to small leaks and pressure building in pipes are more easily fixed vs the big pipe bursts.

You will still need plumbers and HVAC folks…but not as many.

Prediction (without dog in fight) CS and most STEM over or almost over. Glut of kids from the over focus on this for last 10-15 years and skills moving to AI. Will still need human implementation and judgement, though.

If you believe that…then you also have to believe most white collar jobs are “over”. AI can replace accountants, lawyers, junior investment bankers, stock analysts, special effects creators, etc just as easily.
