Advance Math - for non AAP kids

Anonymous
Does anyone know how a child that is not in AAP qualify for Advance Math?

Does it vary school by school? Does FCPS have guidelines. Thanks.

They got tested into the advanced math. It follows FCPC guideline.

I’ve heard advanced math in third and fourth grade will change next year.

We use IReady.

How? I know there is a change to LA curriculum. I was told this week that 4th graders will be covering 5th grade math in the advanced math class.

Not every school has advanced math in third and fourth grade.

It usually is a combo of the SOL performance and the ready, but also parents can request their child be on it

Your AART would know.

Standards changed but also teachers got a preview of yearly overview and there def was a change to 3rd/4th grade based off what my teammates shared. Things they previously taught was not there.

You will have to ask at your school. There are a lot of different scenarios.

Not every school starts Advanced Math at the same time, most schools start it in 3rd or 5th grade. A few wait until 6th grade.

Some schools use iReady scores, report cards, and an assessment test. Some schools use SOL performance.

There is no guarantee that a child placed in 3rd grade will continue in subsequent grades, it depends on their performance in the class and on assessments (iReady and SOLs)

The standard is different at each school and can be different in each grade because the schools want similar sized classes. Advanced Math at our school is a separate class starting in 5th grade and the school will move kids who are borderline into the class to balance it with regular math. I am not sure that is fair to those kids since some struggle (we know kids and parents who have mentioned struggling at different times.)

So ask your AART and learn how your school does it.

Are these changes that affect regular as well as advanced math, or are these changes related only to advanced math (i.e. reduced accelerated content)?

Mine did a couple of years ago in 4th grade. We ended up not doing it. It was stressful because unless you start it in 3rd grade, when AAP starts, you are basically expected to know a year's worth of Math you were never taught.

Meaning, my DS had regular Math for 3rd grade, did great. In 4th grade, he was put into AAP math, which was doing 5th grade Math. Therefore, he never got taught 4th grade Math. I think some kids could handle that jump, mine couldn't. It made him hate Math with a passion. So we bumped him back down.

The standards come from state so those changes are for everyone. Not really sure yet. All I know is my colleague who teaches AAP 3rd noticed a difference in what was listed on the yearly overview preview. There could be changes made though over the summer so we shall see. I will say there were a lot of good things on their yearly overview in general for regular 3rd grade. A lot more multiplication and fraction work so as an upper ES teacher I think that is good. There is a huge push for all kids to take Algebra 1 in 8th. I think the 100 percent goal is unattainable though and they should have made it attainable.
