Anyone received a blood transfusion during open surgery?
Anyone was able to avoid it due to autologous donation or normovolemic hemodilution? |
Yes- lost quite a lot of blood during surgery. |
Same. I'd actually donated two units prior to surgery (my surgeon gives that as an option as needing it for this surgery is common). Unfortunately once I was opened up my issues were more severe than what all my scans showed and I ended up needing 3 more units during surgery and another unit that night. |
Did you have any reactions?
How long has it been? Any other side effects, like viruses and stuff? |
I got something like 5-6 pints after giving birth to my kid. It was fine. No side effects. No reaction. |
I'm the pp who donated my own blood and then needed additional transfusions. Was right around the start of Covid (when it was slowly becoming a thing but before lockdowns). No reaction, no side effects, no viruses. I'd be dead without the transfusions. |
I had one almost ten years ago. It's never caused any problems. |
Did donating you own blood before hand put your hemoglobin down too much? Did it make you more prone to needing a transfusion? How far ahead did you do autologous donation? |
