DE vs AP Classes

You can take more DE Classes than AP classes and it counts for college credit for in-state schools; How do admissions officers look at it - if you decide to apply for a top 25 out-of-state school? Just GPA or do you get hit by the rigor score?

We were told that if you are taking a DE class that is the same subject as an AP class you will get dinged. Similarly, if you are taking a DE class when you still haven't taken the core AP classes (English, Calc, History, Gov, etc.) you will get dinged.

What does this mean? I thought most DE classes were in lieu of AP classes?

I think most elite schools think that AP classes are more rigorous than DE classes at community college.

We were advised the same. If kid is aiming for top schools, stick with AP. DE is looked at as a step below

We were told to stick with AP b/c the test is standardized.

In Selingo's book he mentions that AP is looked at more favorably than DE.

when you self report APs does it ask for date taken?

What about DE classes when there are no AP classes (multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, analysis etc.?)

I have never heard that Gov is a core AP class. What year do you take it? 12th? Kid is at a private that restricts APs until junior year, so trying to plan ahead.

My 2e kid is in non public placement. APs are not an option. DE is an option. Will he get dinged for taking DE? His school is in Mont Cty but doesn't offer the higher level courses.

Schools submit a profile along with a student’s transcript that provides info about the courses and levels offered. If that school profile indicates that no APs are offered, your kid will not be dinged for not having them.
