If you work from home, how many hours do you actually work?

Anonymous
Millennials seem to have gotten used to full time work from home jobs where they actually only work a couple hours per day. No one actually works the full 8 hours.

My friends have various mouse shakers, spouses checking emails to see if an unscheduled call or meeting is scheduled when worker is out and not home.

This isn't going to end well. I don't know what the ultimate ramifications will be -- for individuals and for society, but they will occur.

6.5-7 hrs a day. Older millenial with a busy job. I could work more hours most days but I try to keep to a schedule.

I would say I average about 3-4 hours of solid work a day.

Keep in mind - even before WFH was common, there was a lot of research out there that knowledge/desk workers topped out at about 5-6 hours of solid work a day no matter how many hours they were in the office. So comparing this to 8 hours is a bit silly.

I'm not doing anything weird like a mouse mover or having my spouse check my email. If I'm actually going to be off Slack for more than an hour, I let people know (like if I have a doctor's appointment or have to run an errand or something), but otherwise, I'm always responsive. My bosses are happy with my output and deadlines are getting met. But yeah, I take frequent breaks, and I do thinks like unload the dishwasher, clean the kitchen, sort laundry, etc during my work hours. And that's average - if it's a busy week, it's a busy week, I'll get my stuff done and hit my deadlines. On the other hand, if it's a slow week, I might take a nap.

The full 40 I have no choice, I supervise 15 and have deadlines and meetings all the time. I envy the people who can get their job down in a shorter amount of time. I've tried to delegate more but it hasn't helped too much.

Total of 9-10. Often more, occasionally less
It is irrelevant where I am. I have x amount of work to do and x meetings.
I never understand the argument of people aren’t working if they are not in sight. Give people kpis and goals and if they don’t meet them then deal

What difference does it make as long as work is getting done on time and with expected quality?

I work out of the house. No one works the entire time in office either. People scroll through stuff online, talk to each other, etc. We may physically be at work, but no one is working the entire time.

I work about 6 hours a day 3x a week especially Friday. I work 8-10 the other days, but am available to my boss (who I am training) from 7a-5p and get calls post my actual working hours 3x a week.

I worked in an office for 20 years before COVID and couldn't say that I ever worked ALL 40 hours. There are parties, people who stop by to chat, internet browsing, time futzing about while you make coffee, etc., etc.

Why? It’s always been like this. Rounds of golf. Meals with drinks. Conventions in Maui. George Costanza talking about how to look busy.

Now people can be healthier. Less commuting. Less money spent on pants.

You just don’t like that flexibility is now available for many workers instead of just the bosses?

Millennial (btw, i am 40) here: I work from 8am when my kid leaves for school until 6-6:30pm, longer if I’m on the phone while I make dinner. If I’m lucky once q week I can go for a walk and grab some lunch, otherwise I’m eating at my desk. I also work with West Coast clients, so often have an 8pm call and catch up later.

It isn’t universal, nor is everyone working 100% of their time at their desks. I can tell you I do take mental breaks to look at the recent tooics drama from this site.

If someone is using a “mouse shaker” and are still employed a) they don’t have enough work to do or b) the job shouldn’t exist. M
