Flower Arrangement?

Anonymous
Okay, maybe this should have gone under Decorating but…I am hosting an event in a private room at a restaurant. It would be nice to display a flower arrangement…but how much will that set me back?

Is there a place in Montgomery County MD that does a nice job, at a reasonable price?

I have plenty of vases, so could also buy the flowers and arrange them myself. Thanks
guys.

+1 for DIY

Also, before you pay a florist, ask the restaurant. We hosted an event and the restaurant used their regular florist and the result was lovely.

Another vote for DIY. I do that all the time. I have short table vases--round, square and rectangle. I get bouquets from grocery stores, cut stems to fit the vase/s and done. No bows.

If I need more flowers per vase than the bouquet, I augment with the packs of simple flowers or greens from the same stores.

The good thing about getting an arrangement from a florist is that they can do a low one that doesn't get in the way of people seeing each other across a table. If you are just using the vases you have at home to DIY, your flowers might get in the way of people seeing each other.

One arrangement from a florist might set you back $200 or so if you don't want anything fancy.

I imitated something I saw at a wedding. Get low, square glass vases, about four inches high. Put water in bottom. Put rubber bands around edges, overlapping to create squares in the opening. Cut flowers way down on their stems and put them in the squares; they will stand up. I used sunflowers. Then cover visible rubber bands with ribbon and tie. I used brown ribbon 1 inch. These won't stand up too high or block people's sight.

"Reasonable price" is relative... and also depends on if you have four tables or just one.

I would recommend searching Instagram for "trader joes florist". You'll find a couple of accounts that make really nice bouquets from 4-5 bunches from TJ's. Might give you some ideas. Then just cut the stems down to whatever work so your arrangement is 8-10" high, or so.

If you don't want to do it yourself you can always take your own vases to a florist and tell them what you're looking for.

I like the Wegmans florist service.

I have florists in the family, and really appreciate both the quality of flowers that they can obtain (WAY better than anything you get at TJs, Costco, WF, etc...) and the expertise in arranging. That being said, it doesn't come cheap. For my own daughter's christening party at a restaurant, I bought 5 inexpensive low glass fishbowl style vases and stuffed them full of hot pink roses (from Costco) and golden euonymus cuttings from my garden. Spend less than $50 for the 5 arrangements. Would have paid $75 each from a florist.

Some of us have jobs, lol. And we aren't going to bother with this. But if you have all the time in the world to be shopping for this kind of vase and then playing with rubber bands on them and covering the rubber bands with ribbon -- by all means, knock yourself out.

Then clearly, go to a florist! But some of us both have jobs and don't think it is too hard to find the square short vases (they have them at Michaels), you use literally 4 rubber bands for this, and the ribbon (also from Michaels) can be hot glued on in about 3 minutes.

Come on now, crafty mommy, you know you don’t have a job. Otherwise you would know that this is not worth the time and effort.

I’d try the florist at a grocery store (Safeway, Giant, etc.). They’re usually pretty affordable (especially if you don’t need delivery) and can make you an arrangement if they don’t already have what you’re looking for.
