Newly diagnosed with Osteoporosis

Anonymous
Please recommend me a doctor, nutritionist, and physiotherapist specializing in osteoporosis.
53 yo, menopausal since 51, family history is present on the paternal side. I thought Costco supplements and some exercise would keep me in a good shape. (((((
Osteoporosis of the spine, hip are a bit better.
I’d appreciate not turning this discussion into a forum on HRT.

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis around age 58. I increased my bone density through heavy weight lifting.

Can you give me some idea of what that means for someone 58?

I am lifting weights, but when I got zealous about it my elbow started hurting and I had to go to lower weights.
Similarly, I pulled my muscle earlier and to stop all weight lifting and even had to modify my yoga routine. I just feel that I can’t win.

54 female, had osteoporosis for 4 years and coincided with menopause at 49.

Knew I had osteopenia at 43 when I got a DEXA.

Saw a rheumatologist Dr Shari Diamond but honestly learned more from my physical therapist. PT advised me to wear a weighted backpack and do hard surface walking (I had been walking on a treadmill - not enough to stimulate bone growth) so now I strove for 3 miles, 4 days a week. I also do yoga to help with balance.

I take weekly Fosamax.

For me osteoporosis is own both sides of my family as both parents had it. My older brothers both have osteopenia and take calcium supplements

Per an intermediate DEXA that I insisted upon last year, I’ve made “tremendous to remarkable improvement” and hope to end my course of Fosamax with the diagnosis of osteopenia.

I’ve also gained about 15 lbs and try to tell myself that this was necessary- to add some weight to my frame

I work with an endocrinologist since there’s no one who specializes in bones.

These doctors tend to know the most:

Rheumatologist
Endocrinologist
Sometimes GYN

I take Fosomax, gained needed weight, lift weights, and walk on hard surfaces.

I also take Bone UP with calcium and K2 and D.

After two years, osteoporosis became osteopenia in two areas, and it’s still osteoporosis in the third area but at least moving in the right direction toward osteopenia.

PS:

It is very important to do “closed chain” exercises.

Are you all getting bone scans on your own? My dr refused even though I have a family history because I'm only 50. Said the rec was 65.

Find a new Dr. my Dr recommended it at 51 due to family history.
