Hi,
We are planning to move within Fairfax county. Kids are in elementary school, interested in STEM and are in AAP program. Which HS pyramid is better? Please advise Thank you!! |
The elementary AAP feeder schools for Woodson are Mantua and Canterbury Woods. Mantua is very highly regarded and CWES is a decent school. Frost, the middle school, typically sends a top 5 number of students to TJ every year. Woodson itself is pretty highly regarded, but there is a thread over in the main FCPS forum about a recent tumble in the US News rankings: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1201063.page
Note that you pay a slight premium to live in the Woodson pyramid and get less house for your dollar than you might otherwise because the schools are good. It's not like paying for McLean/Langley, but the same size/condition house that feeds into say Justice would cost a lot less. |
The same kid would do just as well at either school. |
All Fairfax schools have AAP opportunities and the Fairfax County public school system is one of the best in the nation. Teachers come and go and a better rated school today doesn't translate out to a better education for your kid next year.
Your kid has to score high on COGAT and NNAT to get into the Fairfax AAP program. |
I would prefer Woodson for the middle school, since most at Frost (base boundaries; some AAP kids would go to another HS) go to Woodson. Multiple middle schools feed to Oakton - Carson, Franklin, Thoreau. |
Oakton consistently ranked higher than Woodson over the years, although Woodson is a very good school too. |
Woodson. |

My kids are at Woodson, and have had a wonderful high school experience. But I think you really can’t go wrong between the two schools. |
