Anyone have experience with high MCV on a test?

Anonymous
I have had this twice now. My other liver function indicators are normal, my B12 is low but not insanely so. Dr doesn't seem overly concerned but I am a little concerned...

How high?
Anonymous
98 (anything from 79 to 97 is normal).
obv not insanely high but this is not the first time it's been high.

I have had one or two points over the top of the range several times - doctor has never even mentioned it.

Slightly high probably not a concern. But high MCV is an indicator of macrocytic anemia which can be caused by low B12.

How low is the B12? It is likely that. Are you vegan? Gastric bypass? You can start a B12 supplement and see if the MCV normalizes. It is actually high normal now.

Op - In a range of 242 to 1245 the b12 was 367

High alcohol intake causes elevated MCV. How much do you drink?
Anonymous
B12 above 300 is normal. As above, alcohol can also increase size of red blood cells.

Op - no I went through this with my dr and he said the amount I drink plus the other lab results indicate it’s not that

You can stop drinking for 3 months and recheck and see if it’s actually that

You can have symptoms of B12 deficiency at 367. In Japan the normal cutoff is 500.

OP did not mention symptoms- only MCV.
