Dartmouth

My son was accepted to Dartmouth College and we are trying to decide if that is a good fit for him. What are your thoughts on Dartmouth?

Not a fan of the D plan personally, but obviously it’s a fine institution.

What would make it a good fit for him?

Did or will he attend Dimensions? That seems like the best way to determine fit. My DC is going to the last one this month.

Great school! Rural but fun vibe. Mine did not apply due to being too rural, but has friends who love it there. Ended up at a different ivy . They are all great at that level of school.

Lots of general info available online OP. If you have more specific questions, we can be helpful.

What are the other choices, OP? Would be helpful if we knew what to compare it with.

I grew up 30 minutes from Dartmouth. It is pretty rural and remote. The town of Hanover is cute, but there’s not much to it and Boston is a full 2 hours away.

It’s the most conservative of the Ivies, used to be probably the most male-dominated (it was the last Ivy to admit women) so at least in my experience it was a lot of preppy “bro” types but that may have changed. Since there is little to do nearby, there are a lot of campus parties especially fraternities. Dartmouth has a lot of local fraternities.

However since it’s small and no one has anywhere to go on the weekends I do feel like the students form very close friendships.

The surrounding area is very pretty with lots of opportunities for hiking, skiing etc. Tends to still get a lot of snow. The best medical center/hospital in the state is also there (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center) so in case of any medical issues there’s excellent care nearby.

Solid T20 school

Thoughts? Top school and great education opportunities for DC. If they like skiing and outdoors a good match. Friends who went are all in finance, IB or venture capital and very close with the friends they went with. I’d not hesitate to send my DC if they wanted a non-urban campus

DC absolutely loves it! It's a tight-knit community in an idyllic setting and although we are full pay and it's not easy, DH and I couldn't be happier with the college. What is your son like? I would encourage you to join the parent Facebook group where you can ask questions of current parents.

Mine liked the smallness of it, but it didn't seem very diverse at admitted student day. Lots of white and Asian private school kids. Her student lunch buddy confirmed that. She came from a very diverse HS and wanted more diversity in college. I think she might have overlooked that if the vibe didn't feel so private school preppy. Also, the weather wasn't great. Shouldn't be a factor, but it generates a feeling. One day in time ... Also, she had a couple other fantastic options, so maybe she was looking for reasons to move on with them.

+1

As others have said, be specific.

Same poster. And, not into winter sports/outdoors. If she were, might have felt differently. She loved the campus when we visited summer if junior year though.

My kid has a friend who attends. He's outdoorsy and loves snow, so it's a great fit!
