Backpack for Europe?

Anonymous
Wasn’t sure if I should put this in travel or here but let’s see.

I’m wondering what backpack to use for a couple weeks in italy this summer. My husband seems to very concerned about theft and I’m trying to take his concerns seriously. I will have 2 independent older kids and 1 non fully potty trained toddler so I will need a backpack to at least carry minimal things for the youngest. Plus water bottles for the family.

Would love to hear some suggestions.

Is this for packing everything or just to use for outings?

Just for outings/walking around, going to eat etc…

I have a few pacsafe cross body bags.

Where in Europe? The only place I’ve been robbed was in Barcelona, wearing a backpack and carrying my sleepy toddler. I think you’ll be targeted because thieves think you’re distracted by your small children. Backpack wasn’t a pacsafe.

Ok I see you wrote Italy.

Which areas of Italy specifically? Pickpocketing is a lot more common, especially on the metros.

I personally would not be worried about it, but I guess a zippered tote is an alternative (though not as easy to carry). You don't need to carry water.

I would not carry a back pack simply bc it is bulk, it will get hot, and they are not allowed in many museums/churches. Carry a Le Pliage tote or similar and you'll be fine.

I use a small packable backpack from Amazon for water, snacks etc. but I keep any valuables, money, phone, passports in a small Travelon cross body or fanny pack
