“I’m a cultural Christian”, says Richard Dawkins

Anonymous
Richard Dawkins is now a self professing, “cultural Christian”.

Richard Dawkins is probably the most famous atheist of my lifetime. He is a noted scientist, author of the best-selling book, The God Delusion, and fanboy for many an ardent God nonbeliever. For more than 20 years, Richard Dawkins has provided millions with reason not to believe, and with an ammunition dump of rhetorical flares for dismissing theism, and especially Christianity.

“You know I love hymns and Christmas Carols. I feel at home in the Christian ethos. I feel that we are a Christian country in that sense”.

Richard Dawkins, the widely quoted evolutionary biologist from Oxford and an avowed atheist, raised eyebrows last week when he told a reporter he much prefers living in a Christian country rather than a Muslim one.

“I call myself a cultural Christian,” Hawkins told Rachel Johnson of LBC News in the United Kingdom. “I’m not a believer, but there’s a distinction between being a believing Christian and being a cultural Christian. I love hymns and Christmas carols, and I sort of feel at home in the Christian ethos … We [Great Britain] are a ‘Christian country’ in that sense.”

He continued:

“If I had to choose between Christianity and Islam, I’d choose Christianity every single time. It seems to me to be a fundamentally decent religion in a way that I think Islam is not.”

I wonder if Dawkins will convert before death? Sounds like he’s almost there.

I'm a Christian, but I read or heard this several years ago. It's not new news.

I doubt this means he goes to church to hear hymns. Or that he'll convert any time soon.

Where did you read or hear several years ago Dawkins was culturally Christian?

Dawkin’s “right hand man” moved to Texas, began homeschooling his daughter, and converted to Christianity.

How weak must your conception of faith be if you think his saying “yeah, I kind of like Christmas carols” means “he’s almost accepted Jesus Christ as his lord and savior!”?

His eyes are opened to Christianity’s cultural benefits.

Here's an article from 2007: https://baron-scarpia.livejournal.com/170291.html

I'm trying to think of something dumber than that last sentence, but i can't.

You know many Atheists celebrate Christmas still, and enjoy religious music and art?

Did anyone actually say this?

What really happened is Dawkins took a look around the UK and discovered that their post-Christian society was not becoming inhabited by enlightened new atheists, but instead devout Muslims.

And all of the sudden Christianity didn’t look quite so bad after all.

OP, why are you so obsessed with random atheists?

That guy designed and ran Dawkin’s American website and also the red A atheist logo. Dawkins dedicated one of his books to him.

I'm an atheist who LOVES Christmas.

And like Richard Dawkins, I'm a cultural Christian, having grown up Catholic and still celebrate Christmas and Easter. Not the religious aspect of it, but the together-with-family aspect. And the commercial secular version as well, with Santa and the Easter Bunny having visited my kids.

It's a bit similar to secular Jews who don't practice the religious aspects of Judaism, but have a Jewish identity.

And yeah, if I had to choose to actively practice a religion, I'd choose Christianity over Islam any day. I'd choose Judaism, Hinduism, Druidism, just about anything over Islam.

Doubt it. Enjoying music and pretty decorations doesn’t equate to a true believer in Christ rising from the dead.
