Flying with a subchorionic hematoma bleed?

Anonymous
In my first trimester and started bleeding red blood last night, but I already saw a strong HB and measuring on time so I suspect it’s a SCH. Seeing my OB tomorrow but set to fly this weekend - has anyone been in this situation before? Is this not recommended?

See if they will give you an ultrasound and you’ll have more info if it is small or large. I had a medium SCH with bleeding and cramping and I was sent home to take it easy on the couch for a few days until it resolved a bit.

I think it will depend on the size of your SCH and your doctor's general approach to complications. I had an SCH that was on the small to medium side, and I was given no restrictions. I had to fly for a work conference a week later, and they didn't note any issues with flying. This was when I was still with my RE and not released to the OB.

In the first tri, there’s nothing that can be done. Some resolve and you go on to have a healthy pregnancy, and others you miscarry. Flying won’t make a difference.

I personally wouldn't, but I have recurrent pregnancy loss and SCH is pretty much a sure way to lose the pregnancy without intervention. Of course you have to be with a specialist willing to address it.

+1

I had a SCH that started bleeding at 10 weeks. My MFM told me that I didn’t need to restrict any activities, and that he only recommended doing so if it helped me feel less worried. Fwiw my SCH bled off/on (more on than off) through around 22 weeks. He’s 5 now.

I had one an flew a week after it started bleeding. Doctor said it wouldn't make a difference as to whether the pregnancy lasted or not. I was really stressed the whole trip and spent much of it in bed. Fortunately it resolved, my son is now 4.

OP here. Decided against flying since it was a beach/pool vacation and bleeding in a bathing suit seemed not at all relaxing. Taking it easy this weekend, and fingers crossed everything is resolved soon. Thanks for the quick advice!

This is fear mongering and not at all true. I had a first tri SCH and while my doctor encouraged me not to go crazy, they were not concerned in the least and said that the majority heal with with no issues.

This is simply not true. I have recurrent pregnancy loss too, but there is nothing that can be done to address it, especially not in the first tri. I’ve had them in all 4 of my pregnancies. I have one living child. It’s really a crapshoot.
