Everybody is saying the drop in rankings is due to the changes in the admission policy. But according to US news data sources it does not appear to be - https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/articles/how-us-news-calculated-the-rankings
Data Sources section: 1) For the 2024 rankings, U.S. News used the free and reduced-priced lunch data, ethnicity data and grade 12 enrollment data from the 2021-2022 Common Core of Data so the data aligned with the 2021-2022 state assessment data used in the rankings. - NOTE: IT SAYS GRADE 12 2) Statewide math, reading and science assessment data used in the 2024 rankings in almost all cases is from the 2021-2022 school year. - IN 2021-22, TJ JUST HAD FRESHMAN STUDENTS UNDER THE NEW ADMISSION CHANGES 3) High school graduation rates data used in the 2024 rankings is from the 2021-2022 school year for almost all states - IN 2021-22, TJ JUST HAD FRESHMAN STUDENTS UNDER THE NEW ADMISSION CHANGES 4) College Board was the source of the Advanced Placement examination data for each public high school, when applicable, that was used in rankings calculations. The AP exam data used in the analysis is for 12th grade students in the 2021-2022 school year. - AGAIN IT SAYS 12TH GRADE STUDENTS 5) International Baccalaureate was the source of the IB examination data for each public high school, when applicable, that was used to create calculated values. The IB exam data used in the analysis is for 12th grade students in the 2021-2022 school year. - AGAIN IT SAYS 12TH GRADE STUDENTS If everything they looked at for ranking is 12th grade students from year 2021-22, which is students under the old admission policy, why is everybody pointing finger at the new admission changes instead of looking at the facts? |
Per this forum - https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1020881.page - the class of 2022: 11 went to MIT, 7 Stanford, 9 Princeton etc. Wonder why the rankings dropped if they looked at class of 2022 |
Those are numbers accepted, not number enrolled. The same kid may appear on several acceptance lists. |
There were TJ students in the class of 2022 who struggled due to Covid. Hard TJ classes online were tough on the bottom half. |
So, Covid only happened to TJ, not 13 schools about it? |
Everybody knows that the only 2021-22 freshmen entered into some of the ranking calculations. The impact on the new score is not large (99.2) but the ranking drop is significant. Otherwise, you can just say it doesn’t matter if TJ falls to 100+ place which I think will happen next year if not the year after. You are right that the new system should not be all the blame. We all know that FCPS already dumped down admissions standards for their DEI goals a few years before introducing the new admissions system. The new system only officiated what they already did. |
I don't know about other schools. But there were many TJ students who could not handle an online TJ load. So they did drop off in their grades and engagement with school. Perhaps it was easier in non-STEM, smaller schools in other states. They may have been in person unlike TJ. It may feel like ancient history but it wasn't too long ago. |
