Excellent move. Would like to see more of this from colleges run by serious people.
Extending transfer application deadline April 22, 2024 Dear Brandeis Community, I am sure many of you have seen or read about the numerous protests on college and university campuses, where Jewish students are being targeted and attacked physically and verbally, preventing them from pursuing their studies and activities outside of class, just because they are Jewish or support Israel. For many, their safety has been compromised and this is unacceptable. As a university founded in 1948 by the American Jewish community to counter antisemitism and quotas on Jewish enrollment in higher education, Brandeis has been committed to protecting the safety of all its students, and, in the current atmosphere, we are proud of the supports we have in place to allow Jewish students to thrive. Due to the current climate on many campuses around the world, we are now expanding the opportunity for students to seek the learning environment of our campus by extending the transfer application deadline to May 31, with notification by July 1. We are encouraging prospective transfer students to visit our Admissions website for more information. Students elsewhere should know we welcome all — Jews and students from every background — who seek an excellent undergraduate education and an environment striving to be free of harassment and Jew-hatred to apply. Sincerely, Ron Liebowitz |
+1 Strongly agree, OP! |
Wow. This may get interesting for rankings and Brandeis.
I’d expect a bump….maybe top Jewish faculty moving too? Almost an LBO of these other ivies/T20 who can’t seem to get this right. Something to really think about. some svhools could make some huge strides/moves here |
Put a business hat on this situation (private unis are a business)…. all those disgruntled students and donors need to find a home…..
|
Brandeis buys Tulane….
Now that would be an epic story… |
This is really impressive and definitely the right move. It will be curious to see how it turns out. |
As a Jew and the parent of a student heading off to college in the fall, I’ll say that while I understand the practical business sense of this move, I think the actual message is shameful. It’s capitalizing on people’s fear, advancing a narrative unsupported by facts. History will not be kind to cynical opportunists like Ron Liebowitz. |
Oh I disagree. It’s realistic. Pragmatic. If someone shows you who they are, believe them. These schools are filled with people (students and faculty) who would be happy if the jewish students “went back to Poland”. How do you get over that? Forget? Esp when your schools admin is ok with it? |
You’re citing something said by a single non-student protestor outside Columbia’s gates. Not anyone on campus. The students protesting on campus—including many Jewish students—are peaceful. The circus created by the administration in an effort to placate right-wing congresspeople and donors is what’s endangering students. So in that sense, I guess we agree that Columbia does not care about its students’ safety. |
Couldn’t disagree more. It’s an open door to kids who find themselves in college environments much different than they expected when they showed up to freshman orientation. |
Nobody wants Brandeis, even so. |
I live in a very Jewish area and maybe one kid a year goes to Brandeis. Lots apply and lots get in, and they almost all choose other options. Even this year. |
I went to Brandeis as an undergrad. I also went to Harvard Law School. I have always felt that the education I received at Brandeis was leaps and bounds above my experience at Harvard, and today I am significantly more proud of my affiliation with Brandeis than my Ivy League alma mater. I would encourage any students considering it to go. |
NP. My non-Jewish kid at a school that’s been disrupted by kids the non-protesting students commonly call “the brats” is seriously considering transferring over the summer. DC can’t be the only one. Smart move by Brandeis. |
Definitely has a marketing / sales pitch feel to it, but it may be appealing for some. Does seem to be capitalizing on fear a bit, and in that sense, has a Trump vibe. |
