Sleeping arrangements when 1yo has fever

Anonymous
My 1yo has a fever of 102 and is teething (though Dr. thinks that's unrelated). Unsurprisingly, his sleep is pretty bad. Now that he's 1, can I bed share so he's more comfortable? He is waking up often but I'm terrified of his temperature spiking in the middle of the night without me knowing because I had a history of ferbile seizures and am paranoid.

What do you do at night when your baby/toddler has a fever?

Is he reacting to ibuprofen or Tylenol? I'd drug before bed and sleep in my own bed.

I let my kids sleep in my bed when they’re sick, although I usually start them in their own beds and move them if/when I get woken up frequently. At just barely 1, starting the night in my bed usually resulted in my kid not going to sleep/thinking it wasn’t bedtime. If you’re worried about a fever spike or just want everyone to get better sleep, you can give ibuprofen before bed.

When our kid is sick, one of us sleeps on the floor next to the crib. We can (and sometimes do!) hold hands between the bars. Not great sleep for us, but it's a nice firm line, and once they're feeling better, it's an easier transition than back to bed from mom and dad's bed.

Plus, we alternate nights, so one of us is getting a good nights sleep in our own bed each night, which is clutch. Except that one hellish night that both kids had a stomach bug (!)

OP here. I appreciate all the PPs. Still has a fever this morning but seems to be more like himself. Fingers crossed tonight everyone gets some good rest

Glad to hear things are looking up. If you haven’t gotten dosage for ibuprofen from your ped, I would do that during business hours today since the box will only have dosage for kids 2 and up.

Or she can just google it. “Ibuprofen dosage by weight”.

I wouldn’t start bed sharing personally because it can start a habit I don’t want to continue. Rotate Tylenol/motrin.

+1

And set an alarm on your phone so you can check on him every couple of hours.

We have never had any concerns about sharing the bed with sick kids (they usually start in their bed and then come into ours) and then transitioning back to their bed when they’re feeling better.

Hope your little one is better soon.

I had one who used to spike high fevers overnight despite cycling Tylenol and Motrin and I definitely slept with her - peace of mind for me and comfort for her. On a handful of occasions we had to do cool baths in the dead of night.

My kids always sleep in their rooms. If we're worried, one of us will sleep on the floor in there but that's very rare. I'm not interested in re-sleep training.

My toddlers have a history of high fevers (highest reading was 106, common readings are 105-105.5) and I bedshare when they are sick with a fever, or check throughout the night. When they get these high fevers, they need fever reducing meds at the exact intervals for each drug. I don't worry for low fevers but I have had kids so sick with a fever that they are white as a sheet and lethargic and shaking. You have to do what makes you comfortable. Those really high fevers scare the bejesus out of me every time they happen. I doubt our pediatrician would find this necessary, but for my piece of mind, I have to.

If you think it will help. For my kid, changing the routine like that would make everything worse.

I slept in the room with the kids. After they were out of cribs and in twins at 2.5 i would sleep with them in the twin. I dont like bringing kids into my bed
