Does anyone have experience with the Learning Center at Flint Hill Middle or Upper?

We're considering FH for our ADHD son and are trying to understand what the Learning Center is really designed to do and how much support we could expect; we'd be coming from a public school where he has an IEP but are interested in the smaller classes and greater athletic opportunities he could have at FH. Welcome any experience and knowledge about the structure, experience/expertise, etc.

We heard good things about it, but our interactions with the learning center staff were one of the reasons we ultimately went elsewhere. We found them to be not very forthcoming and rather dismissive when we discussed DC’s dyslexia/ADHD profile and possible accommodations (even after DC was admitted, while we were deciding between schools), and while I believe that ultimately it would have been ok once DC was in the system and I think FH is overall a great school, it was kind of a turnoff.

^I should add this was for US. DC was accepted for 9th.

^ Can I ask where you went? Our son is likely dyslexic as well (testing was inconclusive) and part of our decisions involves thinking ahead to high school.

We went with SSSAS. We’ve been very happy with the academic center so far, and DC is doing great and loves the school.

My 10th grade son is in the Learning Center, but only takes advantage of the daily monitored Study Session and a twice weekly 1:1 ADHD coaching session. The coaching has been great at helping him recognize academic and executive function-related areas where he can improve, and then setting and monitoring these goals for each quarter. He's had the same coach for 2 years and she's been really terrific with him. The monitored study session is with a small group and has a teacher who helps him stay on track with assignments.

They just hired a new director of the center.

Really? I’m the pp who was unimpressed with the staff during our application process interactions, and it was primarily the director we were unhappy with. I hope this is a positive change because, overall, we really did like FH.

IMO the supportive services is one area where FH shines.

DD is in 9th grade at FH and has accommodations through the Learning Center. She is not actively monitored but has a LC contact who she can meet with as needed. Overall it has been a good experience. The school has been responsive and flexible with our requests so far.

new director was the acting director and she was an LC coach to my now senior and was fantastic. as years went. by my oldest used the LC less and less and she became more independent and able to track things on her own and doesn’t use it at all this year.

my freshman has a wonderful coach who is very communicative and responsive. they meet twice a week.

the LC can fill up very quickly if you don’t ask for it during application process

Please don’t waste your money on Flint Hill. It is not worth it.

FH's learning center is a place where it shines. A lot of kids who have LC support wouldn't qualify for it in public.
