Jawando forces Monteleone to admit they're cutting RJ coach stipend after trying to tapdance around it

Anonymous

Watch from 19:00 - 26:00. I'm no Jawando fan but he successfully forced slippery Damon Monteleone to admit what he wasn't trying to admit.

Why are MCPS officials like this? Why do they lie and hide and pretend so much?

Optics. They're fine, it's fine, everything's fine. Bullshit.

Monteleone was respected as RM's principal, I think. Look what happened when he went to CO. The toxicity tears people down.

I’m not sure I am seeing what you are. They have to make cuts because RJ was funded by allocations schools aren’t receiving anymore. I didn’t even know my school had an RJ coach. I can’t believe they want someone full time for it. Jawando probably wants that program to be increased. A 6000 stipend is insane. I wonder what they did to justify that size of a stipend.

That’s an insane amount for RJ.

I express no opinion on the value of RJ coaches.

But I don't see what you see. Monteleone explained the pre-existing funding, the loss in funds to support it, and the impact.

What is the problem?

Just adding, the specific question Jawando asked was "why" not "whether/if". Monteleone answered the question asked.

I guess our staff development teacher was our RJ coach? For which she received an additional $6,000? Geez.

+1. Not seeing what you're seeing, OP. But thanks for the link to the session!

If you watched the full exchange and weren’t troubled by the way Damon answered the line of questioning, I don’t know what to tell you.

To be clear, it wasn’t the original question that Jawando asked that forced Damon to fess up to the cuts. It was the follow-up questions Jawando asked to whether MCPS had a plan for how it would distribute the stipend.

Damon tried to get away with not mentioning the elementary RJ coaches would be eliminated. Jawando forced him to admit that. Then Jawando forced him to acknowledge with his so-called strategy of focusing the stipends at the secondary level, that the funds requested weren’t enough to maintain RJ Coaches at ALL secondary schools, which Damon sheepishly conceded to.

I won’t even get into how Damon misstated the stipend at the secondary level as $4,000 rather than $6,000 and had to correct himself, nor how he was off by about $100,000 on the overall budget amount requested for RJ stipends that Essie had to correct him on.

I'm no fan of Jawando. He touts public education, but his kids go to private/public charter schools. He's a public official who espouses to support black and brown families, however, he knowingly took financial donations from corporate donors who are bulldozing the Bethesda cemetary which contains the bones and bodies of slaves.

Making it work for him during an election year. Ask the hard questions, folks.
