Colombia Water Scarcity

Anonymous
DH and I are considering a trip to Bogata/Cartagena for a few days in June. With the latest news on water rations there, should we cancel, go ahead and book it, or just wait to see if things change regarding the water shortage.

My initial concern is that we may be asked to not use water in our hotel and/or the restaurants/hotels may not be able to clean as thoroughly with water limitations. I also read that each area has a 24-hour "no water" mandate some days.

I considered asking my co-worker who is from Colombia and has family there, but I am concerned they may be biased an/or downplay the issue.

Apparently the drought is caused by El Niño, which is expected to end soon and reverse to La Niña this summer. So you might get more rain and lower temps than expected.

Colombia is very clean as a country, and tourists are treated exceedingly well.

Yes! We are very familiar with the country, which is why we were excited for this trip finally. Our primary concern is with with water restrictions currently in place, and if the thought is that it's reasonable to expect that it would be better by early June.

I would play it by ear. If they are indeed still rationing, you don't want to experience that or be taking water from people who need it. But as one poster has suggested, the drought may be over by the time you travel. We are watching it ourselves because we plan to go in December.

I think it’s just in Bogota because of their reservoir. I would still go but either skip Bogota (go to the Andean highlands or Medellin) or be flexible (be prepared to adjust plans).
