Free Summer Leadership Program for HS-Aged Youth

Anonymous
Designed to empower high school-aged students to become community change-makers, the Students Demand Action Summer Leadership Academy is a weeklong program from July 22nd to the 26th that focuses on leadership skill development, community networking, and education about the gun violence prevention movement. Students Demand Action is the largest grassroots, youth-led gun violence prevention group in America and a part of Everytown for Gun Safety.

We’re excited to bring the D.C. Summer Leadership Academy back for its second year! In the past, we’ve met with community partners like the T.R.I.G.G.E.R. Project, learned about urban gardening and food insecurity at UDC Gardens, toured the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, and engaged in discussions on leadership development and personal growth. After a week of similar experiences this year's participants will graduate from the program with the know-how to take a community project from idea to reality and a network of fellow leaders ready to support them along that journey.

Each Summer Leadership Academy program is designed and led by college-aged coordinators (ages 18+). High-school aged participants are mentored by the coordinators throughout the week and work to develop lasting relationships with fellow students and mentors. Each day of the program lasts from morning until late afternoon with a curriculum that is curated to the host city by host city coordinators and Students Demand Action staff. The Summer Leadership Academy is offered to student participants at no cost; meals and transportation assistance are provided. Service hours can also be signed-off on for participation.
