Long wait for a Diagnostic Mammogram?

Anonymous
Has anyone had a diagnostic mammogram with Inova, and how long did you wait to get it done? I'm new to mammograms, and my doctor referred me to get a diagnostic mammogram, due to some on and off breast pain, no lumps. They referred me to Inova, and looks like they only do them at Fairfax, and their wait time is 5 months! Is that normal? Thank god I don't have any lumps!

I don't think its true that they only do them at Fairfax... I did mine at Inova Mt. Vernon. There was a still a pretty long wait time though. Did you call the scheduling line?

I called the Springfield location that was listed on my referral. The scheduler scheduled me at Fairfax, early as September.

You can’t do it through Fairfax Radiology?

I could call and see if they would accept my referral that lists Inova.

See if you can get it elsewhere. Call your provider and tell them the wait is too long.

I've never had to wait that long, at worst 4 weeks (and I get them a lot). I go to Hopkins in Baltimore, but they have satellite offices around MD.

They can. And they usually can get you in within a few weeks.

Yes, that's way too long. I got in for mine in a few weeks (still too long but I think they fit in those who they suspect have serious conditions first).

I do believe that you can do them other than at FFX and at FFX Radiology.

I'd call elsewhere. I usually go to Washington Radiology or Community Radiology.

For a diagnostic, they usually get me in pretty quick, and I've had to have a few diagnostic mammograms.

4-5 weeks is normal. Not months. No way would I wait that long.

Call Washington Radiology. They have a number of offices. The one on Arlington Blvd. is where I went.
Are you in an HMO? I would not wait months.

OP here. Thank you everyone! I have good insurance, and will call other places. Waiting that long for diagnostic doesn't sit well with me.

I went on Washington Radiology's website last week and got an appointment for the next day.

Not normal. Go to Sibley or WRA.
