Pragmatic/Social Communication therapy

Anonymous
My daughter has been diagnosed, at least initially with social communication disorder. I am looking for recommendations on a speech pathologist who specializes in this area. Daughter is 11. This would be in addition to hopefully joining a skills group as well. We are in DC and I will reach out to skills on the hill but I am hoping to find some other options as well.
Thanks

Search for social skills groups. They are led by other professionals besides speech language pathologist. Social skills are best taught in a group with peers.

Also, does she another diagnosis such as autism? Does she have an IEP? special education teachers and school counselors address social skills and social-emotional skills in the school setting.

OP, it depends on what the needs really are. Pragmatic language is an area of expertise for SLPs, whereas social skills could be addressed by a psychologist, LCSW, special educator, etc.

If you are in NWDC, our DS goes to the Speech Space. Not sure about classes, but one on one therapy there has been helpful. Sometimes if you ask the speech therapists they are also able to pair up or create small groups of kids working on similar issues.

You can’t have SCD and autism.
