Newport RI or Martha's Vineyard?

Taking a trip up to NE coastal area and looking for recommendations on area's to stay. I've done a day on Block Island, but never narragansett, marthas vineyard etc.

Shopping & dinning are the priorities. Will be doing a college tour at JWU and URI too.

If shopping and dining are the priorities and you’ll be in RI anyway, I’d opt for Newport. It’s fun to visit a couple of the houses and do a trolley tour too.

Just visited Newport. Considered MV too but Newport was much easier to get to with no ferry required. We had a nice weekend. It was quite crowded despite being before the official season.

I love Newport compared to MV.

For what you describe definitely Newport. MV is more of a production to get to especially if you want to take your car. If you are already spending the time in RI just stay there.

If you are looking at summer check the festival schedules. We went for an event a couple of years ago that coincided with the Folk Festival weekend and it was hard to get a hotel room.

Newport. MV is a pain to get to for only 1-2 days. And it's a zoo.

Are there any other areas similar to newport that we should look into?

Now that you've mentioned it, MV sounds like a headache!

There are plenty of things to do in both places. If you want to go to the beach, that's easier in MV. In Newport, there isn't much public beachfront.Boat rides, shopping, walks, and interesting architecture are in both places.

Do Newport and Providence. I went to JWU and grew up in Mass. Look into Narragansett and Westerly as well for beaches

??? Rhode island has terrific beaches (among the best on the East Coast IMO), and 3 are in Newport. My favorite of these is Second Beach.

Narragansett beaches are really nice. Try clam cakes in Pt. Judith.
