Health insurance

Is there any affordable way to get insurance outside of work? I HATE my job and feel stuck with it due to health insurance because ACA plans (no subsidy) are crazy expensive. Am I missing something? I already looked at kid plans in state and they are no better, since we are not eligible for any sort of help.

Nope because America 2024.

You are stuck unless you want to take a short term plan for 90 days. Those plans are only allowed 2 times a year and the deductibles can range from low to high. We have such a broken healthcare system in this country. It's so frustrating!

It really upsets me. The irony is this job is destroying my health due to high stress. My pay is not even good, but the benefits are decent. I am so mad when I hear Democrats say the ACA is so great, more and more people are insured...Sure, you can get insured, but then it costs you $$$$ in premiums or care or both. And I know Republicans have no solution and just want to remove what little access there is. I don't understand why it's not a huge scandal and platform issue.

What is your income? The ACA is more reasonable for those who make less.

Too high for the ACA subsidies. Otherwise I'd obviously do that! Currently we pay $600/mo with my job, and we'd pay over $1600/mo through the ACA, for a crap plan. It would feel absolutely foolish to give up my job and spend this much, yet I have never wanted to quit a job so much in my life.

Sorry, OP. But it sounds like the answer maybe is to look for a better job. I mean, beyond health insurance, you'll need income, right? Can you really just quit?

Also, if you do quit, and your income declines precipitously, you may find that you qualify for ACA subsidies after all -- if not right away, then before too long.

Our “employer sponsored” plan is so crappy that it’s really no better than what we could get on the exchange except that our premiums are pretax if we do it through the employer.

We’ve had several crappy employer plans in a row so I forget that some people still have decent employer plans.

I left working for someone else to work for myself. My income more than easily covers the $1200 plus a month I pray for a blue cross HMO open access plan for my teen and myself. And the cost is a tax write off. Totally worth leaving the employment of a company.

That’s two people though so likely a pretty great plan for that price for two! Crap plans for four people are more than that.

Because your job subsidizes a large portion of the healthcare costs.

We have a good plan. We pay $400/month for family (includes employee, spouse and all kids no matter the number) for health, dental and vision. However, the company pays $1800/month in addition. So if you want that "good coverage" I can expect to pay $2200 on the ACA exchange. And I priced it once and that is fairly accurate.

I agree that we should centralize it for everyone. However, the costs have to come from somewhere. Most jobs that currently pay for health insurance should IMO give a healthcare "bonus" in my opinion. Our company pays $1800/month so they should give me a bonus of $21.6K for healthcare yearly to counteract that. Otherwise, I'd end up paying way more in taxes to subsidize that plan and get less in return.
