Every day I eat pretty well, exercise, and have a good dinner with a glass of wine. Then it's hard for me to turn it off, especially if we are watching TV or hanging around talking, which is a lot of evenings. I start thinking about having a big bowl of buttery popcorn and wrench myself away from that by having another glass of wine, or start thinking about pouring another glass of wine and distract myself from that by eating ice cream. I feel like I need something appealing, but not very caloric that could be a new habit and signal the end of the consumption. Herbal tea does nothing for me.
Ideas? What do others do? |
I chew gum, or have a few of those Dutch hard licorice cats (katjes) candies. They have a strong black licorice flavor and are hard but eventually turn to gummy so they keep my mouth busy for awhile.
That or go outside for a quick walk. |

Fruit, herbal tea, hot cocoa (you can make it yourself and add less sugar, but even a packet is less fat and sugar than ice cream), air popped popcorn with less butter. |

Sorry, just saw that tea isn't your thing. Maybe a Popsicle? You can make them with fruit and yogurt. |

Piece of dark chocolate. But really it’s the wine. It’s hard not to let yourself eat a treat once you’ve had a glass of wine. I would cut that out first. |

Thanks for the ideas! I know, quitting drinking entirely is probably the next horizon. For now I'm just trying to keep is (what I consider) reasonable. |
Tea (no calories) and up to 200 calories of chocolate.
Jello pudding + cool whip. You can eat regular versions for about 150 calories in moderation, or get the zero sugar kinds and gorge for the same amount of calories (I prefer the former). Mini Magnum bar. 150 calories. Popcorn is not a bad treat if not too buttery and you like salt. Carrots and ranch (or cottage cheese with ranch seasoning, full fat, protein keeps you full). If you don't assign calories to the carrots you can get a big bowl of cottage cheese for 150 calories. 2 fudgesicles. |
Clio mini chocolate covered yogurt bars (60 calories)
Frozen berries with a squirt of canned whipped cream. They take longer to eat this way and freeze the whipped cream a little in a way that's really tasty too! |
