menopause and feel better

Anonymous
Anyone else enter menopause and feel better? I know the board is filled with horror so wanted to see who is out there.

I had an emotional perimenopause--weird periods for about 7 years, anxiety, hormonal anger--particularly bad around period, exhaustion as the years went on for a week before period, functional ovarian cysts that would cause pain and bloating and stomach trouble when I would get one--a few a year--they go away on their own. I had a few pelvic ultrasounds. Then, I at 53 I had one extremely, extremely heavy period (last June) that lasted weeks until I went to ER--got meds to stop bleeding--had pelvic ultrasound and endo. biopsy--nothing found. Low progesterone was the cause--so they gave me Prog. only BC but I stopped it after 3 months because it made me bloated and was starting to gain weight.

I haven't had a period since mid-December and since then I have felt fantastic. I don't get bloating. My moods are stable. I don't get that racing anxiety and snappiness I used to get right before my period. I sometimes get a mini hotness (but not even a true hot flash--just a flush and gone). But- I'm absolutely loving not having periods and that freedom as they got so crappy and unpredictable at the end.

I know I'm not 'officially' in menopause since it's only been 4 months without a period (I'm 54 now)--but I don't feel the need for HRT. I really think hormones effect me strongly ---as soon as period started as a teen-I had a lot of issues. My body also had trouble with some pill formulations and breakthrough spotting. I think w/out the hormone surge and all that estrogen I'm actually better.

Just a mind dump and wanted to know if anyone else just felt better when their periods stopped?

I so hope this happens to me!

Guess you are an anomaly, OP. Not any responses.

I think most people who have a hard time "during menopause" are talking about the peri years, when you had a hard time too! I think once you get to actual menopause (which hopefully you are in, though you won't know for 8 more months) it does feel better.

Agree with PP. Peri is the bad time. Menopause, or stretches that look like it, are when hormones have reached a new equilibrium, without wild fluctuations.

I'm definitely in perimenopause, even though I haven't skipped a period and I seem to be ovulating most months. But the anxiety, panic, moods are pretty bad around ovulation and also before periods. I've always had a tendency to bursting ovarian cysts. The pain gets really bad, but I get them very rarely, so...?

Oh well.

Yeah but most of these people go on HRT after peri which op apparently doesn’t need. I see a lot complaining about symptoms after the period stop- weight gain, hot flashes, exhaustion, dry skin, hair loss, etc

I have had all of this except the cysts since my 20. I really hope that the mood and anxiety symptoms improve after menopause which hasn’t happened yet.

Yes. The last thing I want is HRT or anymore hormones in my body. I did awful with BC and then the progesterone-only pills that put me on for heaving bleeding in the last few 'hurrah' periods.

6 months of no periods. And as soon as they stopped--I've felt fantastic. I don't have 'ups and downs' in moods or stomach issues. And- at the end of peri--I literally was bleeding or spotting for 1/2 the month.

I have new energy and a new calm.

^ the best part is no more bloat for part of the month. My body would retain fluids and I'd get a pooch and I also would have bowel changes--constipated right before period and then loose stools during period.

All of that stuff is gone!!! Back to normal everything. I upped protein intake and reduced carbs some what.

Yes once you are fully menopausal you will indeed feel much better.

Yep! I felt so much better once I hit full menopause.

Yes! For the last three years before menopause, I had horribly painful headaches that hit two days before my period and would last about three days. Nothing helped, drs gave me migraine meds, which did nothing, aspirin would take the edge off a bit, which is what led me to keep insisting to doctors that they weren’t typical migraines. This about twelve years ago and most of the doctors I saw didn’t make the connection - about six months before my last period, I finally saw a female Gyn who had been through the same and I finally got a diagnosis of hormonal migraines. The month of my last period was my last headache of this sort and that was the end of my menopause issues - no hot flashes, spotting, or mood swings. I didn’t take HRT. A few years later I started seeing some weight gain & dry skin, but nothing like most of the complaints I read.

You’re not in menopause until you have 12 consecutive months with no period

I know. I'm a biologist. I'm saying periods have stopped since December and I have felt great ever since. To the other pp--I used to get awful hormonal headaches too---worse when I was on the Pill. They would start as soon as the last active pill. Headache, bloating, anxiety, spotting, cramps, mood swings, exhaustion...all gone.
