Swim Team Board

Is this the HOA? Who’s on it?

Does it include the A Rep? What are their responsibilities and what are they deciding on?

Are they helpful? Maybe our team needs one.

We have a pool board that contains the swim team reps, rather than the other way around. I suppose the reverse is possible, but depending on the nature of the operation it might not be needed. Personally (I have some experience with board governance, but it is highly limited experience) I might follow the budgetary structure as guidance. If the swim team needs a board of its own to manage its finances responsibly and correctly, then maybe. But if that 'board' is really just a voting committee that will slow down decision-making by trying to control the reps and coaches, then the swim team has other problems that a board won't fix.

We don’t have a swim team board. Like the PP there is a 13 member board for the swim and tennis club and the team rep is one of them.

Our pool is not part of an HOA. The pool has a board but swim team is separate. Our swim team is run primarily by two moms.

We have a board and it has a group of over zealous parent who think they know best. They don’t. A bunch of control freaks. Normal parent don’t want to do this so it’s all the crazies.

Never heard of a swim team board. We have an A rep who runs the team and hires coaches. He has brought in others to help and bounce ideas but in the end he is in charge.

It is a hell of a lot of work to run the team. They start in January to get it all set up.

We have an hoa with a board of trustees. Then a pool committee. Swim and Dive has their own board. Parent run. Pool ops stuff has to go through committee. A lot of layers. All volunteers.

We do this. It’s a lot of work for the A Rep but it’s easier. Boards have too many chiefs.

Often times they want a kickback for their service. Priority for their kids

Kickback might be a strong term - the definitely want to have influence. But when you are a big helper you do get that too.

Favoritism. And when they don’t, they claim bullying. They are jerk and everyone knows it.

Summer swim team - We are a committee within the HOA and have our own board with 4 voting members (chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer) that meet every month. League rep, meet manager, data manager, HOA rep, and a few long time parents attend as well. Our coach doesn't as she is out of the area at college. They meet monthly Dec-May. I was the vice chair for a few years.) Things we do/discuss:

Budget
Ensure enough volunteers for the season (S&T, ref/starter, snack shack coordinator, data manager asst, etc.)
Set up winter swim (this happens at an outside pool for conditioning)
Coordinate suit fitting, try outs, etc
Publicity in the neighborhood (table at the community yard sale, announcements in emails/newsletters)
Reserving pool house for meets/spirit nights
Coordinating senior gifts/banners
Designing/coordinating spirit wear
Coordinating with HOA

No kickbacks/favoritism for any of our kids (we don't do A/B meets) and most kids swim the max 4 events anyway (relatively small team - 65 kids)

Ha! I love the claims of bullying when something doesn’t go their way. Parents like that are asses.

Our team is run by our swim rep. She has brought in a lot of people to help her though. She also listens to people and tries to incorporate suggestions. There have been a number of changes to the team because of this.

It is a ton of work and nobody wants the job - including our rep who got stuck with it.

Our pool board helps the team set their budget, hires the head coach and makes major decisions that impact the whole pool. The team itself handles the day to day through the treasurer and the team reps. The reps do not have seats on the board.
