How hard is it to get in to Burke or Field for HS?

Anonymous
Curious if we should apply for Ms or wait for HS, how hard is admissions at either school? Less than 20% acceptance rate?

One of my kids got accepted at Burke. You and child both need to make clear it’s your top choice and know why that is and how your child will fit in.

You’ll be interviewed together and separately if they haven’t changed things.

I imagine Field is a bit easier to get into in MS. The last couple years over 90% of the 8th grade class stays for high school. But they do expand a bit for HS. Idk the acceptance rates.

Private high schools don’t public admissions rates so nobody can say for sure what percentage of applicants are accepted to these schools. Burke in particular wants families that embrace the progressive education model. I have heard of students being waitlisted there. The middle school classes are much smaller and they expand numbers quite a bit in 9th grade for high school.

I think easier for MS admissions at both these schools than HS

I doubt the current MS students would all be admitted for HS but I think that’s true for all privates.

Burke is easier to get into 9th than Field.

If you are full pay, both are easy to get into. Both make good use of the wait list as well since many use these schools as safety schools and then decline their spot. Not clear that Burke is easier than Field as PP suggests --fewer spots at Burke and as well Burke appears to be a notch more discerning with less adhd, more mainstream kids.

I believe Field is a difficult admit for 9th. They don't want to be anyone's backup so you should make it clear they are your favorite. We often have only 1 or 0 kids attending from our k-8 each year. Usually kids that wouldn't be a good fit for the pressure cooker schools.

I know less about Burke admissions outcomes. Our school rarely has graduates attend there - but far fewer are interested in Burke than Field from our school. Probably not for any other reason than there are other schools of the same caliber closer to home and maybe families care about having more of a campus.

I suspect both are easier to get into for Middle school.

Why are you thinking about either of these schools? Seems like you should start as soon as you can if you really believe their mission is the best fit for your child.

This.

Burke and Field were our top 2 schools. Applied for both in MS. Got in one and waitlisted at the other. Accepted the one offered and kid is very happy to be there. (And I am very happy that we won't have to do this again until college applications!)

Field's wait list is not moving this year.

How many kids are in each middle school? I think Field HS is around 65 per class.

Burke hovers around 30 per grade in MS. It more than doubles in HS.

Sometimes.

Kid got into Field for 9th and waitlisted at Burke.

It happens.

Probably 1/4 of the 8th grade class is leaving for high school.
