Dog has runny stool, eats grass, and scoots

Anonymous
We have a vet appointment this coming Monday, but I was wondering if there was a good, high fiber treat/food I could give her. This has been going on for a few days. She's a four-year-old retriever mix and otherwise seems fine. I saw Glandex at our local Petsmart. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

My dog had the same symptoms and it was worms! I would try a dewormer and see if that resolves.

Go to the vet today. It’s worms.

Is the grass eating recent? My dogs love fresh spring grass.

If recent, then it could be causing loose stool which THEN causes the anal glands not expressing during #2. Therefore, they rub their bums because full glands bothers them.

When the poop is firm it releases the anal glands naturally.

All of the comments above are good (you can drop off a stool sample to be tested) but you can also give the dog a few tablespoons canned FRESH pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) and see if that firms up the stools. If it's a smaller dog, give less.

Don't let him eat grass.

We use Glandex and pumpkin firm up powder in his food for these issues.

This is most likely it. Pup picked up some chemicals or something from the grass that upset stomach and the cascade of events PP describes.
You will know if there are worms...you can see them in the stool and often around the anus (ewww, I know).

Just do a chicken/rice/pumpkin diet for a couple days until the vet appt.

Not necessarily true. There are worms/parasites you can see in the stool, and there are some that you can't.
OP, at most vets you can drop off a stool sample for testing without an appointment if you are concerned about worms. You could call your vet and ask. In that case, you would probably have results back by Monday instead of just testing on Monday. But how long has this been going on? Usually when a dog gets diarrhea it's because they got into something they shouldn't have and ate it.

My dog had issues with super soft/mushy stools, and the vet recommended psyllium husk. It's been working great; I give him one heaping teaspoon with each meal. His stool is still pretty soft, but I'm actually able to pick it up in one piece without leaving a mess behind in the grass.
