Normal to feel like you’re dying after birth?

Anonymous
I’m so sorry OP. I remember (but also have sort of blocked out) this feeling of whether I might die from sleep deprivation after my first. Even when I had a hour or two or three I couldn’t fall asleep and was so shaky and anxious. I am not normally an essential oils person but my doula recommended this and I think it did help me:

Banyan Botanicals Sleep Easy Oil – Organic Ayurvedic Herbal Oil:

I got another bottle before kid #2!

If you can have your partner or someone try to help you get 3-4 hours of sleep in one stretch, that was the game changer for me. It’s so so so hard but do whatever you can to prioritize it.

Wouldn’t I be running a fever.

I think it’s PPA and possibly PPD. Anxiety causing a lot of physical symptoms add on extreme insomnia.

Just go get checked out.

I did on Friday. Everything normal. I’m getting my thyroid checked this week.

My doctor thinks it’s exhaustion and anxiety. My OBGYN & PCP are the same person.

Why didnt you get blood drawn on Friday or Saturday? Im not questioning you I just dont think your OB is taking this seriously. Ill also add OB/PCP are NOTORIOUS for undertreating thyroid and not understanding optimal levels.

And even if it is just exhaustion and anxiety what is he/she doing to HELP you?

She’s on vacation now for her birthday.

I mean, not sure what else she can do beside tell me what meds to take?

What are you eating? How many calories a day and are you getting fat, protein and sodium? You really need a lot.

The anxiety meds can increase anxiety at first making you feel this way too. You may need to try another med if you haven’t been on this one before.

OP, how are you doing?

Not normal a week after. Have you had bloodwork done to rule out things like an infection or anemia?

I would give up breastfeeding (if you are doing it now), and just sleep all I want. I will order carry out for all meals, and have your husband or family take turn taking care of baby in the house while you recover.

This thread was a while ago so hopefully you have resolution, but I had the flu/hit by a bus feeling with mastitis. My first pregnancy, it hit me a week PP and I had no other symptoms, OB started me on antibiotics and it all went away. My second pregnancy it hit me the day after I went home and I did develop red breast streaks. Again, antibiotics to the rescue.

Many of us are thinking of you, OP.

And if it helps there are likely new moms out there feeling similarly or ones that will read this in the future. Your vulnerability and action on asking this question helps others.

Please update us if/when you feel up to it ? No rush and zero responsibility to do so.

Hope sleep is happening 💗

Probably not a lot due to extreme nausea.

Not great but some improvements. Pretty sure it’s PPA and the medication can increase symptoms before working. Yes, I’ve been on this before. I’m incredibly sleep deprived and having a hard time taking in calories.

Giving up BFing for something I hope is temporary feels like a major decision. I’ve wanted to do this for awhile and I’m lucky I have a good supply and baby is latching and transferring milk well. I just need my physical body to recover and we should be good.

Not normal. Could be birth trauma/postpartum PTSD, anxiety, sleep deprivation, sepsis, or preeclampsia. Go see your OB immediately, and get a full work up. Also get a referral
To a perinatal psychiatrist. The shakiness and pelvic floor injuries make me lean to postpartum PTSD (I had this - could not sleep also) but you want to rule out medical issues first.
