I wouldn’t assume anything at this point other than that Boies Schiller would not have gotten involved unless they either were persuaded that the girl’s (now young woman’s) case had merit or that it could give rise to a substantial civil settlement.

They are among the best trial lawyers in the country, and it’s likely FCPS’s lawyers, while no doubt expensive, will be outmatched.

Money often works in situations like these. Hard to know the actual truth in this case. It's hard.

Are you related to one of the defendants? Sure sounds that way.

Nope. But I am an FCPS teacher, and I do have male children instead of female ones. Maybe this colors my view of the he said, she said scenario? What is your bias?

My bias is against administrators who downplay reports of sexual harassment, urge students to retract and/or revise their statements in order to minimize their own obligations, and ask a victim to ignore her own needs because a predatory male student may have had a “tough life.”

But how do you know that's what happened? That is certainly what one side is saying... but how do you know that's the truth?

You are so gross.

I have a kid at Carson who had a valuable item stolen earlier this year. The thief was identified (not to us) and the item returned and we learned that it was not the first time the particular student had done this but no mention was made about any sort of consequences. Do they just get a talking-to? I’m not sure we are setting these kids up for success if there are no real consequences for their actions. For my kid, this caused a good deal of stress.

If I could do it over again I would plan for private school. FCPS in 2024 is a far cry from publics where and when I grew up.

But I don’t think something that happened 12 years ago is linked with today’s current environment, nor do I think it is unique to Carson. This is FCPS-wide, and broader than FCPS.

Latest testimony from case:
https://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/fairfax_county/refusing-a-nuts-and-sluts-defense-kate-speaks-publicly-for-the-first-time-about-her/article_7c2d1498-e84e-11ee-b2cb-dbd0df696156.html

My heart weeps for the failure repeatedly committed by FCPS in paying attorneys millions $$$ to silence a 12 year-old child that was a victim of rape. Just disgusting. Sickening.

I hope eveyone is paying attention to this case. This could be our kid. Please talk with your kids about advocacy, interventions to help friends and themselves, and how we can support them when/if this ever happens. Victim blaming on this “nuts or sluts” defense is disgusting. Troubling we are 2024 and yet still victim blaming in the courts today happening.

We can do better as a community. We need to do better. Our kids deserve sexual assault free education. Yes, this happened ten years ago. But the rape culture doesn’t evaporate from a school community into thin air. It permeates and continues when behaviors are tolerated and basically rewarded for not helping a child 12 year-old victim from sexual assault.

Why is everyone so sure that this was not consensual sex? Now, if it indeed was not, then it seems a pretty clear cut case, and the offenders will have to pay a lot of money. But, unfortunately, this does not seem to be an open and shut suit.

The victim shaming on display here is shameful.

Are you connected with the case somehow? Or just passing judgement based on your interpretation of the information?

I'm honestly beginning to think that someone connected to the case is blitzing posts on social media. Who knows. It might help, I suppose.

On a site primarily visited by women, you’re surprised that a girl subjected to repeated sexual harassment and assault that went largely ignored by school officials cuts a sympathetic figure?

It’s far more likely that you have a personal connection with one of the defendants, or are worried that your ill-mannered son might some day be called out for his boorishness.

+1. I wasn’t that other poster and completely am disgusted. So much venom towards a child victim. It makes me sick to read.

I would invite you not to speculate that nothing was done in terms of consequences. Just as you would never want an administrator sharing about your kid with another parent, you don’t get to hear about what happened to another student (even if you don’t know their name.)

+1. Such one-sided storytelling. Just because someone alleges something doesn’t make it true. Let the case proceed and then see what the outcome is.

+2. When they say “we don’t really know all the facts,” what they are really doing is calling a victim of sexual assault a liar. It’s sickening.

I knew it! I said in an early post on this thread it was you all along. You’re upset about the money in the laptop sleeve that was stolen!
