Looking for a hotel within a 2-3 hour drive that has its own beach. Don’t care if it’s ocean or lake. I am disabled and have limited mobility but want to take my 7 year old to a beach this summer. I guess any oceanfront beach hotel would fit the bill, but the huge beachfront hotels at Va Beach involve A LOT of walking. Is there anything smaller? |
This is OP. Something like the Tides Inn would be ideal but I can’t pay $700 per night, and we don’t really need all of the resort amenities. |
The hotel on the boardwalk in Bethany is right on the beach. Minimal walking. It’s pricey unless you go off season. |
Hyatt Regency Cambridge MD
Whoops--has a nice little beach but I think the parking lot (free) is somewhat of a long walk to the hotel. |
Try Colonial Beach, VA. |
Ocean city might work

Beach view motel in rehoboth. |
The Inn at Herrington Harbor in Southern Maryland. I’ve never been so I can’t speak to accessibility but it seems like it would meet your needs.

This is OP. I was just looking at this. I can call them to ask if they have accessible parking. |
Not overnight OP but check out the lake at Greenbrier park. It’s a few mins past Frederick and my kids loved it last summer. It’s a shallow beach with sand and clear water. You can sit under a tree in the shade and still be close enough to watch them. |
Op, I have a couple questions to try and help you find a place that works. First, can you walk on sand- if not, there are beach wheelchairs, but you’ll need another adult to push (they are bulky and heavy). Also, are you willing to drive to the beach from where you are staying - sometimes that can be easiest because there are some places with boardwalks onto the beach from public access points vs a hotel on the beach may have a lot of sand to traverse to get close to the ocean (I’ve seen these in NJ, but those beach towns are a little beyond your 3 hour drive radius). |
Me again. Please verify but I found (old) information on the Easter Seals website indicating that Rehoboth Beach has those boardwalk ramps/mats over the sand at the Maryland Ave, Laurel Street and boardwalk entrances. It also said to call beach patrol to rent a beach wheelchair.
If that helps you, I’d rent an apartment via vrbo/air bnb and drive to one of those spots each day. |
+1. We go every summer. |
We’ve used the beach wheelchairs and handicap accessible beach ramps in Rehoboth for my MIL. They are kept in a beach hut and a lifeguard will get it for you. |
