Title IX

Obviously Title IX is broader than college sports, but given the robust infrastructure for girls' sports nowadays, and the college gender imbalance, is it time to do away with requirements to have equal numbers of sports teams for men and women?

Why do I feel like this thread is a “stealth thread” about transgender men invading women’s sports, and using Title IX to justify it?

So you want to get rid of the mechanism that ensures equality because there is equality (thanks to that mechanism)?

My experience working in an institution that has to follow Title IX is that while it works, it only does because of people who file Title IX complaints, and not because people actively choose to follow the letter of the law. Plenty of institutions are out of compliance and/or responding to grievances on a constant basis. Most schools deal with Title IX on a reactive, not proactive, basis. Therefore I would argue that it isn't effective at all.

Ha, I swear I'm not. I work in Title IX and was just thinking my job probably didnt need to exist. I remember growing up in the first generation of girls to really play sports, with the dads all coaching and cheering us on. DH and I were at one of our daughter's games the other day and realized, hey, all the coaches now are moms. Women's sports have developed followings and interest. It was basically affirmative action for women's sports (I know this will make my point sound even worse) but a lot of the structural barriers for women - even more so than with race - have been removed imo.

You always, and forevermore, have to protect protected-class rights. If you don't, it is all too easy to fall back into old ways.

Now, as much as ever, women's sports need to be protected. And the more women who succeed in sports, the more people will grow used to watching them, and want to watch them, and women like Caitlin Clark will get closer to earning on par with men.

Maybe you should pose this question in a gender studies forum/class...

What sport are you seeing moms coaching? This is not our experience at all. I find it sad.

Title IX is much more than sports. And, the changes the Biden administration is making are an abomination.

Today, the Biden admin is releasing regulations more powerful than most real legislation. His Title IX changes:

- Redefine sex in civil rights law to include gender identity, exposing girls and women across the country to men in their bathrooms, sports teams, and locker rooms

- Reinstate Obama-era kangaroo court rules for men accused of sexual assault on college campuses that completely flout due process and make mere accusation the standard that can ruin young men’s lives
- Encourage universities to unconstitutionally curtail protected speech in the name of subjective offense and “harassment”; empower schools to enforce rules like punishing children for using biologically incorrect pronouns
- Curtail parents’ rights to know what schools are doing with their own children with regard to “gender transition”

Each one of these changes itself would be a five-alarm fire, and in many cases represent unconstitutional curtailment of established rights, rights federal courts have consistently upheld. These changes will be challenged in court. But it’s a good reminder of the enormous power of bureaucracy to massively change American law and curtail all of our rights overnight.

Redefine sex in civil rights law to include gender identity? WTAF

This is the absolute worst part of the Title IX changes, IMHO. So perverse. I sincerely hope that this policy gets challenged in court and reasonable judges roll back this insanity.

It is being challenged. These changes are ridiculous.
And, to roll back the requirement to give men (or women) accused of sexual misconduct in a school setting due process is against everything this country stands for when it comes to our rights.

Not completely accurate. It's a civil hearing, so it is using a civil standard. It's not a criminal charge. However, once found guilty of a civil infraction at one college, good luck getting into any other college.

“Abomination” is too nice a word. This is a nightmare. But I wouldn’t expect any less from that old fool.

This is so wrong.
