Lower grading because didn’t pick harder question

This is pure curiosity as I’ve seen this now in both ES and MS. In ES, teacher had a short answer test question like “Pick a character from the book and compare them to another historical figure. Or make up a different question about the book and answer it!” After the test, teacher told kids she gave more points if they made up their own question because that was harder than just answering hers. In MS, different teacher had test question that said to make a line or bar graph to plot certain points. Another where after the test the teacher said she gave more points to kids that did bar graph because it was harder. Anyone else have teachers doing this? Just curious as am used to teachers saying in a test if one part is more a “bonus” so kids knew when taking test. To be sure, life moves on and bigger worries, just struck me as odd the first times and stranger still when saw more times.

I think making up your own question about the book is much easier because you can ask yourself a question about what you remember the best.

Same with line or bar graph. Some will find one easier than the other but not everyone would find the line easier.

So not really a great idea on the teacher’s part

Former teacher here.

Totally wrong unless teacher informed students - in writing on the test - that more points would be given for answering one question as opposed to the other. I think it is a bad practice to begin with.
