Which episodes of “Your College Bound Kid”

Based on recs from this board, I’m planning to start listening to YCBK. When I looked today, there are over 400 episodes! Could folks recommend particular ones that they found very helpful? I want to be informed about the college process for my kids, but not sure I could listen to >400 hours of podcasts

Just start listening to the current season.

Introverted DD found the episode on interviews very helpful.

I binged it last year to support my current senior.

If I was in your shoes I would go back about a year ago and start listening so you can start getting a sense of the style / messaging etc.

By listening to spring a year ago you will be able to lay a base for future episodes. Once you start listen, you might realize that the episodes on International Colleges are interesting but not where you need to spend your time - of the whole FASFA mess - supreme court decision etc.
Then you can go back and fill in for some of the schools and listen to college spotlights - or a topic that is of interest (they did an interesting student interview on cyber this year)

Don’t listen to the first few years with not great cohost. So you can eliminate 1-200 probably

The last few from April/March would be a great start. He talks about what is going on now with admissions, which is really useful. I particularly enjoyed the episode on the SAT/ACT.

You can probably search for keywords using whatever podcast app you use to narrow down the episodes. So if there are particular topics or schools that interest you, you can narrow it down that way. You may also be able to search episodes on the YCBK website.

New episodes come out every Monday and Thursday. You might want to listen to tomorrow's episode to get a start. You could also start with this episode from last week:

YCBK 419: Mark and Vince discuss observations from this year’s admission decisions

It's an ok podcast depending on the guest. There are exhaustive show notes. Colleagues have worked with his counseling firm and do NOT recommend him to work with students. He was collecting stories for his podcast and not committed to spending time with the student. One of the other counselors worked with the student on essays and she was attentive and available. We'll probably hire his firm but work with the other counselor.

I agree with this (also because those episodes are mostly pre-Covid and less relevant.)

I like the episodes that include his friend David (Williams, I think?) - he's very insightful. The ones with the woman from Milton Academy.

The titles and show notes are helpful, so you can always jump around. I tend to prefer the Thursday episodes.

that's funny - I skip that guys stuff. his job seems to be to summarize articles in a way that takes 3x longer than reading the article

I like Julia and Vince.

Sure, if you want to listen to a guy that went to Princeton and Harvard 30+ years ago and a woman who's experience is in a boarding school. Totally relatable.

Agree, the pre-covid-era episodes are not as helpful.

I like Julia and Vince.

Vince is awesome, the other one from CA who travels a lot, the two women that do spotlights.
