Shrevewood Elem AAP vs. Lemon Road AAP

Anonymous
Title says it all. Current 2nd grade family at Shrevewood. I know they have changed the level 4 model so there isn't a segregated class anymore. They are doing level 4 for all. Curious to hear from those at Lemon Rd or those who made the switch from Shrevewood to Lemon Rd. Apparently there were a lot of families last year who left but I don't know any of them to inquire. thanks.

We are a family that stayed and have regretted our decision. Cluster model didn't work well in our particular classroom. There are too many variables at Shrevewood.

OP here - will you switch next year? Can you clarify the variables you are referring to? I know behavior is a huge issue in the current 2nd grade. Are there other variables I am not thinking about?

We made the move last year. It has been better than we ever could have expected. Very welcoming community. Teacher communication is incredible. School communication is great. You should attend both information nights and make the decision that is best for your family.

Behavior, language, learning disabilities. It's chaos.

I haven’t heard anything bad about Lemon Road.

My experience with Shrevewood has been good, but everyone seems to indicate that our grade level (4th) has an excellent cohort of students. I can’t speak to 2nd grade like the PP. They do full pull outs for math where one class is generally a year ahead (5th grade math in 4th).

Second grade mom at Shrevewood here. I do agree that the 2nd grade class had major issues in kindergarten and first grade with behavior. Part of that was due to the large class size as a result of some kids red-shirting from the previous year to avoid virtual kindergarten. There are more than 100 students in the grade. The administration is not perfect, but acted to address the concerns by adding a teacher to this year's second grade -- meaning there are now five teachers instead of four teachers and class size 21-22 kids per class, rather than 26-27.

Things are still not perfect, but I think most second-grade parents would acknowledge that this year has been a great improvement over previous years as far as behavior. It is not chaos anymore.

Clearly, there are benefits to the AAP program at Lemon Road. I am not encouraging AAP parents to stay at Shrevewood or to leave for Lemon Road with this post. I just want to set the record straight and assert that some good changes have been made this year, and I think the administration has worked to address the issues.

+1. Administration is strong. But the change to cluster model for AAP has drawbacks.

Shrevewood's admin is good at public speaking. I am not sure if it is always followed through on.

Second-grade mom poster from above again here. I completely agree with you that the cluster model has many drawbacks for high-achieving kids, who would benefit from being challenged by their classmates. Personally, I am not a fan of the changes. But, despite my feelings about AAP, I did want to respond to the "chaos" comment above. Whether you are staying at Shrevewood or moving to Lemon Road-- I think it's clear that the behavior changed a lot this school year for the second grade class and "chaos" is no longer an appropriate description.

Who is looking for a new job? The principal? AP? teachers? AART?

Shrevewood admin have an impossible job--the school is incredibly diverse, the parents of the UM kiddos are incredibly demanding and entitled, the teachers are incredibly demanding and entitled and every classroom with this cluster model has far too many needs to be met. The Shrevewood admins can't possibly keep all these players happy but they do a fantastic job trying. So maybe that's "good at public speaking" but our kids are happy and thriving.

As a previous poster stated, attend both open houses. Make a list of pros and cons and listen to your gut.

We were in a situation where we didn’t know how much better a school could be until we left. (It could we worse, too.)
