I ate dinner by myself at the bar of a restaurant tonight, and ordered two drinks. The bartender comped my second drink, so I added the price of the drink onto his tip. Do you do this, too, or something else? |
Yes |
Yes, I do. Because they put the work into getting it to you, and you're tipping for the service. |
A subtle way for a server to make a 100% profit on the owner's capital. |
I will always round up.
If you're going out to eat, don't be a cheapskate. If you're trying to be thrifty, make rice and beans at home. |
You tip on the full amount as if the item wasn't comped
Eg $40 total, $12 drink comped so you get a bill for $28. You tip as if the bill were $40 |
Going out to eat isn’t cheap. |
This is what I do. Tip on the total bill before comp. |
Yes it's a FU to the owner. Stealing. |
This. The server shares their tips with the rest of the staff so you are tipping everyone. |
+1 This is the right answer. A good (and honest) bartender doesn't expect the equivalent of the drink cost in his/her tip. |
Not in every place FYI. I do wish restaurants had to post their wages and tip practices to be available so people can understand where their money goes OR just stop the archaic practice of tipping anyways. |
Meh. I’d rather it go to the bartender than the owner. |
I usually throw in a few extra dollars, above the 20% before the item was comped. Makes sense to me since I'm saving money, might as well be generous. |
I do not add it to the tip. The bartender is stealing from the restaurant. |
