Cheap Amazon buys that can pass for casual businesswear

I'm starting a new job after working remote for 10 years. This job is hybrid (gasp!), which means people might see me once or twice a week. I should probably not wear my Old Navy joggers on those days. I don't want to spend a lot on a wardrobe, though. It's still just hybrid.

I have suits, etc., for conferences and important meetings. I need a handful of pieces for my in-office days where I might run into an actual human. I don't want to spend much on this possibility though.

I'm 5'1
Weight 127 (yes, a little chonk, I'm aware, lol)

Did you interview in-person? Do you have a sense of what other hybrid folks are wearing on their RTO days? My office is a lot of blazers and nice jeans but other places might be more or less formal than that.

Online shopping is fine but you don't want clothes from Amazon. They are all cheap & shiny.

Macys sells nice pull on pants and capris. INC brand. I have a couple and they work well. You can add a good plain tshirt and cardigan.

OP here.

I'm definitely open to pull on pants and capris, etc. I haven't seen the office look yet. My direct report is 100% remote and all my interviews were virtual. I can't imagine that it's too formal. It's the research side of a public university. Mostly engineers/professors/grad students.

If you have a Costco card, look into what 's on offer. Generally decent quality, affordable if a little frumpy.

Please don’t pay into the fast fashion complex. Buy fewer clothes out wear what you have.

I love these - they will be a perfect crop for your height and are pull-on. They usually also have a khaki color available too:

Does it have to be Amazon? Can you visit an outlet mall for better variety? I have had decent luck at nat’l harbor.

For 1-2x per week, I’d want 2 pairs of decent trousers and 2 pairs of shoes. IMO, you don’t want to go *too* cheap with either one because it will likely show and they won’t be as comfortable/long wearing.

And then for summer, add a few lightweight t’s and/or tops from someplace like banana republic factory — they tend to be decent. Add at least one neutral cardigan.

Just go to JC Penny's or Macy's in person and try things on. I hate most of the clothes I've ordered online unless it's something I already have and want another of.

Do not wear capris. I can not stress this enough.

I second Macy’s. I had to get some basic workwear fast and I’m also petite and found a lot of inexpensive stuff. Granted, I do not look trendy but I am wearing clean, tailored “work” clothes. Get the credit card if you can. They give insane discounts.
