We have a shady side of our house. Our porch is there and overlooks the neighbor's yard.
What can we plant that will: Grow no wider than about four feet Grow in shade Grow 6 or more feet tall? I've ruled out pencil holly and thuja green giant because they either need too much sun or grow too wide. |
Maybe chindo viburnum. I think it depends how much shade you’re talking, but ours grow well in partial shade where hollies have not done well. |
How tall does upright japanese yew get? |
Rhododenrums! |
Emerald Aborvitae |
Maybe skip laurel. |
This as long as you have proper . These would be perfect, but do not do well in any wet conditions. |
I have one of these in that spot, and it's not grown in years. I have four in another part of the yard, and they've grown maybe one foot in 3-4 years, if that. |
So, I have this also against the back fence. They haven't grown! I fertilized last year and again recently. Maybe I am cursed!?! OP |
I was wondering about these! OP |
Thank you to everyone who gave answers. I read about this one and think it fits the bill since it isn't picky about soil and is even evergreen! https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/viburnum-awabuki-chindo/ OP |
Grows slowly |
mine are skanky...like tall and skinny, not full and lush. |
I have skip laural in wet, shady conditions and they do well. However, to keep to OPs size constraints, they will have to cut them back. Thing is, you can cut them back as much as you want and they will continue to happily grow. Not so bright these guys. |
Another idea is to put up a privacy fence or a trellis with climbing plants. |
