Cash bar at a wedding?

Anonymous
I moved here to Boston (Cambridge) from DC a few years ago for work. I kind of like it here. However, I went to a work colleague’s wedding last night and was shocked that it was a cash bar.

Who does that?

Tacky. But not outside the norm since people want fancy weddings who can’t actually afford them. Happens in DC too.

I actually think this is fine. Nobody needs to get stinking drunk at a wedding. The cash bar weddings I’ve seen have “free” wine served at dinner, then a bar for who

When you host, you’re supposed to host. Perfectly fine to not serve alcohol or only have been and wine, but you shouldn’t make folks pay for anything at your wedding

So cheap

It’s fine. Weddings are crazy expensive nowadays. I would understand.

It’s not fine. If weddings are expensive, they should do one within their budget.

Tacky. I’m no st all well off and don’t even drink, but we’d have a free bar.

Gross. Better to have less/no alcohol than to charge guests.

But it's not Boston specific.

It’s pretty common in Boston.

It is. I’m there to celebrate not drink. It’s fine. I can have a good time and pay for my own drinks or not drink. My body, my choice.

What does this have to do with Boston?

You didn’t move to Boston, you moved to Cambridge. Big difference.

better to serve drinks and not invite work colleagues

It’s not ok. We have a friend that did this and 20 years later we still refer to him as “cash bar Ken”.

Save money elsewhere, but don’t force your guests to pay for drinks. Incredibly rude.
