Homeschool and NVCC at same time?

Anonymous
I have a child that I exclusively homeschool who is in 10th grade this year. I would like to have them take some classes at NOVA next year but I am not sure which ones or how many or the benefits. Any advice would be appreciated!

Please post if you find any info. I have a tenth grader in the same situation and am looking into this too. I’m thinking the benefits are taking a class in person with others and helping with college applications. We just started looking at the options.

Many homeschoolers do this as dual enrollment. If you’re on facebook, you can get lots of information (locally and nationally) on this process through the homeschooling groups. Secular homeschooling in NOVA is a good one. You could also call the admissions office at NOVA (I’ve read they the Alexandria campus is more knowledgeable about the process for homeschoolers) and talk to them. Finally there are places like Compass in Herndon that offer advising services and workshops that can walk you through this process including how to document the credits on your child’s transcript. I think Compass is having a workshop on homeschooling for highschool soon.

Science classes with labs (Bio, Chem, Physics) are hard to handle at home. So those might best be handled as dual-enrollment.

My advice: remember that college grades will stick with your child forever. Set the student up for success (ie don’t start with a full load of classes). Overall it’s a great way to get college experience, earn credits (my child was able to have more flexibility while in a 4 year college due to the DE credits earned). It also adds legitimacy to the homeschool transcript and shows your child is capable of college level work when applying to a 4 year program after HS graduation.

Which classes did you start with? Were they at NVCC?

Not NVCC, sorry. Definitely look at potential 4 year colleges and check the lists for which classes transfer toward Gen Ed. Both public and private colleges will usually have this info available.

I have a junior that is taking classes at NVCC. I just followed the above instructions and so far have had no issues. She had to take a math placement exam for Calculus enrollment. She had a PSAT10 score which allowed her access to all other courses.

This is me again. Kid is doing all of Jr/Senior year through NVCC classes. We aren't a typical homeschool family - just started this year after a bad year in public. Had she stayed there, she would have been in all AP/IB classes anyway so doing them at NVCC seemed like a reasonable choice. She does 3-4 courses a semester and we choose them based on FCPS dual enrollment options + which ones are most likely to transfer to an instate college based on the guaranteed admissions requirements.

Thanks. I’m not OP but the other poster with a similar situation. Is she taking them on campus or online?

On campus. She typically hangs out on campus to do work between and after classes and has found some study buddies.
