Losing weight in the first trimester

Anonymous
I put 20 lbs back on after cooling down with dieting and excising after my wedding.
I was being lazy and picked up my old snacking habits. Anyway, I’m not pregnant and would like to lose it. I started working out, cutting down on snacking, and keeping track of what I eat which would’ve done the trick before I was pregnant but I’m not as hopeful now. Does anyone here have tips for dropping weight in the first trimester?

You don’t want to focus on losing weight while you’re pregnant.

But you can exercise and eat healthy, and if you do you may well be in better shape after you give birth. Just don’t be focused on the scale, because you have to gain weight to have a healthy pregnancy. Even though some women who start off overweight might actually lose a little overall, they’ve still put on considerable pregnancy weight - they just lost so much fat that they net negative. I don’t think being 20lbs overweight puts you in that category.

I had GD and ended the pregnancy the same weight as when I started, and the doctor was fine with that. But it depends on where you started and how the baby is doing, so you need to listen to your OB.

Get hyperemesis. I lost 20 pounds every first tri. You don't want to do it that way. Pregnancy will do what pregnancy will do to you and how/when you gain will have more to do with genetics and luck then you're actions. Just don't treat pregnancy as a way to go full 'eat for two'.

I lost weight in the first tri (I was technically in the healthy BMI range by like 2lb already) because of no alcohol and even just mild morning sickness combined with wanting to go to bed before dinner. Lost maybe 5lb but then started gaining normally in the 2nd tri. It’s nothing to worry about unless your doctor is worried.

Just saw that you’re trying to lose weight on purpose- I wouldn’t do that, eat when you’re hungry and stick to healthy foods and you might lose some naturally but you need to listen to your body if you’re hungry!

Stop eating all junk. No processed food. It’s terrible for you and terrible for your baby. Pledge to not eat junk ever again, pledge to not feed it to your child, and pledge to not bring it in your house.

Agree with others. Eat when you're hungry. Try to avoid allowing yourself to eat crap as a treat because you're pregnant (or manage it - like small pieces of fancy chocolate vs. a milkshake).

And exercise! If you feel up to it exercise is so good for maintaining your health and fitness in pregnancy. It makes labor and recovery easier.

Just gain less weight overall. Ill be honest you can do a LOT and still gain significant weight because thats how your body and genetics work. Some women gain nothing and have a small tummy. Some gain a lot and show immediately.

Just focus on fresh foods, eating your daily caloric needs, taking the prenatals and other vitamins, and walking as much as possible- especially after meals. You can work out but Im jealous if you have the energy to go hard. I do a 30-40min workout 3x per week and walk M-F 3 miles and thats all I can manage with my fatigue. I am solo parenting a 6 year old 6am-7pm (or later) and working FT M-F. Its a slog.
