Leads for private hockey coach

Anonymous
Hi - my 11yo DS wants to get back into hockey to join a school team. He skated a lot and messed around but never seriously played. I think he'd be more comfortable taking some privates over the summer. Any recommendations on where to start to look for this? We are in Bethesda.

Matty Valvano at Cabin John. There are several good private coaches at Cabin John - https://montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/cabin-john-regional-park/cabin-john-ice-rink/lesson-camps/private-lessons/

Look at the TriCity website. Their clinics and private coaching (skating, skills) is fantastic and reasonably priced for the area. There are numerous summer camps in the area. Look in Rockville Ice Rink, Gardens Ice Arena website

Try Ben Kwon. He is fantastic, especially with kids that age. He mostly works out of MedStar in Arlington, but I know he is in Bethesda a lot, so he may work at some of those rinks too.

When are you hoping your kid will play? It's going to take a lot of time to get him game ready.

I would sign up for as many of these as possible: https://www.medstarcapitalsiceplex.com/summerhockeycamps

I'm in a different market, so take it with a grain of salt: my son's coach went on and on about how private lessons were turning kids into selfish players who can do a nice Michigan in practice but can't play the game. I still find value in private lessons as my kid doesn't learn skills well in a group setting, but apparently, some people don't. Maybe the answer is private lessons plus find opportunities for him to play in 3v3, scrimmages, summer leagues, etc.

My kid likes Coach Benny. The times are very early.
