Jr. Coaches

For MCSL, what is age minimum, and do they have to be lifeguard certified? How much are they paid?

Every pool may be different - but i think it's 15 yo. Maybe between $15 and $20?

Our pool doesn't pay hourly it's like $600 per season and it works out to be a lot less than $15/hour. They don't get paid for all the practices and don't consider it working when they are at the meets they are also swimming at, so they are typically working the Wednesday meets and not the Saturday meets. It still ends up being a lot of hours as they are expected to attend all the team events. . . but again not paid for being there. You can make a lot more $ lifeguarding depending on how your team structures it.

I know in Virginia you have to generally be 15 to work - there are exceptions for summer camps where you can be as young as 12. I do not know what the laws are in Maryland.

Our NVSL team hires jr coaches. They are paid hourly. I believe about $12-13/hr. Not all hours are paid. Some hours are expected as being a member of the team.

Our nvsl team has zero junior coaches

The 12-15 are usually unpaid or paying themself.

Actually, it’s 14 in VA although a lot of employers don’t want to jump through the hoops needed for an under 16 employee. Jr. coaches have to be 15 because they need to be lifeguard certified (at least ours do) and that’s the lower limit for that.

DD is a Jr. coach for her NVSL team and made $13/hour last summer (plus received a nice coaches gift from parent donation Ms at the end of the season). Only practice hours were paid; helping at meets, pep rallies, etc. was expected but not on the clock.

How large is your team and how many assistant and head coaches do you have?

Less than 100 kids. We have had either one head coach and one assistant, or two head coaches.

Not helpful for MCSL but in Virginia you need to be at least 15 to be lifeguard certified and need that certification to be a coach. If no one from MCSL posts, you could probably check the Maryland Department of Labor website for information.

We are NVSL and the number of junior coaches varies year to year. We pay a flat stipend not based on hours but we define expectations. We also use junior coaches to coach our pre-team.

We are MCSL and the same. You have to be 15 to be a jr. coach because you must be lifeguard certified. They also coach pre-team.

They are paid a stipend of $600 for tax reasons. They rotate shifts but it’s a lot of time investment. Most do it for the fun and camaraderie, not for the $$. Some teams don’t even pay and get SSL hours only. Being paid is a luxury only some of the bigger teams can afford.

We do SSL hours and they get a gift card from parents at the end. About $250-300. It’s for fun. Not for money.

NVSL teams we have jr coaches they forget a lump sum and not much ( works out less than minimum wage) They have to be lifeguard certified
