DCI Union

Anonymous
The staff at DCI publicly announced the formation of their union yesterday and asked the ED for voluntary recognition (hopefully he does). Huge shout out to everyone who made this happen and I hope they receive all the support in the world. Our children will be better served if their teachers are respected and treated with dignity!

Is unionization necessary for dignity and respect? That's not been my experience.

They should look at what happened at Mundo when Mundo unionized- -All the teachers left right after unionization- their pay is LOWER than other charters, and they have had nothing but instability and turnover since unionizing. NO THANK YOU

read any of the mundo posts on DCUM lately - does not seem like "our children will be better served" -just watch enrollment fall - a win for Latin and Basis but not for DCI children

Oh STFU, so sick of hearing this. Teachers didn't even get a contract until 2023. Their main demand about their evaluation system that American University found racist btw, is still in place. Teacher's unions can be powerful but not DCPS'.
Also data does not show schools that opened earlier are doing better, look up some data and check your facts before making such a basic comment.

Don’t believe people on DCUM who obviously have no kids at the school. Teachers at Mundo did not leave and supported the union and stayed. They have gotten significant raises, more prep time, PD support, classroom support. Turnover has been very low since the formed the union.

It’s good DCI teachers have formed a union. It will give them collectively more negotiating power at the table.

Posters like above don’t know crap.

Total sidebar, nothing to do with unions, but data are clear that districts that stayed remote longer had even worse learning loss and persistent chronic absence than those that opened earlier (and still had plenty of neg outcomes).

I don't know much about MV or how union changed things bit the 62% teacher retention on their report card seems concerning.

I’m the PP and at Calle Ocho campus. I can’t speak for P St but I only know of 1 Spanish teacher in another grade that left at our campus. We have had great teachers this year.

The 1st 2 years coming back from the pandemic was rough and we lost some teachers but were not unique in that aspect. Teachers are leaving everywhere. I think now things have stabilized and it’s been a great year.

See article below some of the benefits the teachers get. Teachers have a much better seat at the negotiating table.

They got more pay after the non- unionized teachers at other charters fought for charter teacher pay down at council. Before that unionized Mundo Verde teachers were at the bottom of charter teacher pay. Look it up.

Not sure about right after. For the most recent year per the OSSE report cards, they retained 51% of teachers at one campus and 60% at the other.
