Is South or East better? First time visiting.

East Hampton is easier access to Sag Harbor, Amagansett, Montauk. When are you going? If now, no traffic so you can hop to each hamlet easily. If summer, Southampton is perfect if it’s a quick visit for beautiful beaches, dining, shopping. You’ll avoid the long stretch of traffic on 27.

I don’t know much about South but East is nice from June-September. The rest of the year, to me it’s just Meh. The only great thing about it to me is the beautiful beaches and lovely summer “scene” there. The towns seem overcrowded with overpriced shopping available on every corner and NYC traffic/parking woes.

The Hamptons in summer as a destination in and of itself is totally mystifying to me.

I’ve had a lovely time there in shoulder seasons and winter. I’ve also had a lovely time when visiting friends where the point was being social and spending time with them. If you’re there for the scene in summer I get it.

But if it’s just to have access to a beach town, I think there are far better choices given the crowds and general difficulty of navigating this place.
