Does DCUM skew uber-wealthy?

Anonymous
Jeff, not sure what kind of demographic info you collect. But I find that this board seems to classify healthy salaries as middle-class, people post outrageous incomes, et cetera and I don't know if I need a reality check, if this is truly how people live, or this is just a rarified bubble. Any idea?

Yes, always has. This is getting old now and I am not sure how valid it was in the first place, but this article claims we are the 3rd wealthiest website:

I believe Jeff has said in the past that the DCUM demographic skews wealthy. I mean, some of the wealthiest counties in the country are right here, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

No, but there's also some hugely solid middle and working-class areas here too. Are those folks not browsing DCUM?

It seems like not as much. This place has topics that draw wealthy people and make others feel inferior.

Too busy working 2-3 jobs.

Don't forget the hobby side hustle.

I fall in this category and I really don't think they/we are on here as much or at all, likely because of less bandwidth as well as potentially fewer neuroses/insecurities as the types of wealthy people I suspect post on here (please note I am a deeply insecure, very neurotic person).

I think there are a lot of idle people on here, and there are more idle rich than idle middle class, by necessity (I am a rare idle middle class person, in part do to health issues that keep me at home working part time, looking for a place to worry online).

Most of my middle class friends are truly never bored enough to hang out on here. From reading the site, I get the sense most of us are deeply bored, which I think reflects (1) SAHMs with rich husbands and kids at school or with nannies, or (2) professionals with mind numbing desk jobs that nonetheless pay reasonably well.

When I read the money and finance forum, I mostly just roll my eyes. I think a lot of it is lies, but I also think sometimes you're getting insight into the warped understanding of finances that only someone with a 500k+ HHI and no sense of perspective can offer. Middle class pragmatists with actual money concerns (and often smart ways of dealing with them) need not apply.

I get the impression from many of the forums that this is not as true as it used to be, and that many less well off people (for lack of a better description) have found their way to the forums.

I'm not sure it skews uber wealthy. I think it might skew poser.

There are a lot of repeat posters so take that into consideration.

Does somebody regularly track the locations of where people are posting from in order to determine whether they live in a wealthy area or not?

NP, but it seems to depend on the topic at hand as to what demographic posters identify themselves as. They are poor and middle class in the relationships forum, although they are asking about luxury vacations in the travel forum, inquiring about private school tuition in that forum, and paying jillions of dollars for travel sports in those. This in addition to the fashion and home renovation questions.

I don’t think it skews Uber wealthy, but I think it skews mostly top 5-10%, although they are so out of touch they don’t realize they are. Until they do in the showing off forums.

I find it hard to believe that anybody, Jeff or the advertisers, would base their calculations of DCUM financial status on self-reporting by DCUM users. That's insane. There has to be some other evidence of users financial demographics.
