Belize trip reports?

I have seen Belize mentioned a few times in recent threads. Does anyone who went to Belize for SB want to share more details? Costs, where you stayed, etc?

Caye Caulker - great little island with sand roads, bars and restaurants. very laid back and easy access to the reef.

Mystic River Resort in the Cayo District. Close to all the ruins and jungle adventures.

We went years ago, before Caye Caulker was developed, but I’d suggest deciding if you are ok staying two places (in which case I’d stay somewhere near San Ignacio and somewhere on the cayes) or if you’d rather stay one place, in which case someplace in Stann Creek would give you access to both jungle and beach.

We were there in summer 2023. The sargassum on San Pedro's beaches, and every other beach we visited, was very bad, rendering them unusable, but the diving remains excellent. Much better time in the rainforest at Bocawina (birding, waterfall rappeling, pretty amazing ziplining).

I don't think I'd return to Belize if I wanted beach time. The sargassum is just destroying whole coastlines.

We split the time in the Jungle and the atolls.

We had a great SB in Belize! Southwest started running a seasonal direct flight from BWI on Saturdays so getting there was very easy.

We had a pretty active trip and stayed at 3 places in the week. We started with a rented house in San Ignacio for three nights in order to have a good jumping off point for tours. Day one we did zip lining and cave tubing, day two we visited Xunantunich and Big Rock Falls. (We were going to visit the ATM Cave on day 2 but my daughter didn't love being in a cave day 1, so the tour company kindly switched things up for us. Swimming at the waterfall was one my our best activities, turns out!) Each night we had dinner in San Ignacio - the town can look a little rough but we felt very safe and there were a bunch of great restaurant options.

Then headed to Black Rock Lodge for 2 nights. My husband is a birder so that was the big draw there (and the birding was exceptional.) My kids spent the day swimming and tubing in the river. The lodge was wonderful and the scenery was spectacular.

Then we arranged for transportation to the water taxi to Caye Caulker (with a stop at the Belize Zoo, which was wonderful.) Two nights on Caye Caulker with a full day of snorkeling. I could have used another night on CC for sure. We fed the tarpons and the stingray in front of Iguana Reef Inn (where we stayed) as well. Loved this little island!

The sargasssum is SO much less bad than it’s been the last 2 years. Really almost not a problem at all.

We're going to Belize later this year and rented a catamaran for the week (with crew). We're hoping to go to less touristed locations. Fingers crossed!

Please report back. Curious how cost/itinerary compares to BVI
