If you’ve flown to Europe within the last year, how strict were the airlines about the size of your carryon? I know the rule is no bigger than 45 inches total distance (LxWxH) around and I’m wondering if I really need to get new luggage for the family since our carry ons are a few inches larger. |
Depends on the airline and class. Lufthansa is very strict. Sometimes you can sneak on U.S approved carry-ins if you are flying business class, otherwise it’s tough. |
Yes they can be very strict. I measured and weighed all my luggage! |
If your carryon was an inch larger you might be ok, but a few inches larger isn’t going to fly…in an overhead bin. |
We flew Delta to/from London Heathrow, and I have a very generously-sized carry on. I’m sure it was too big and too heavy, but no one batted an eye in either direction. I don’t think they cared. I didn’t have to measure or weigh anything at either airport. |
Tye flights to Europe are larger planes than domestic, and have bigger overheads. The OPs carryons will likely fit with no problem, and room to spare. |
It's not To/from Euorpe/USA. It's within Europe that matters. Spouse often is forced to check bag in Europe, even in Business class, despite always being able to take it on for the flight to/from Europe |
Air france/Delta weighed everyone’s carryon plus personal item together before boarding on a recent trip and made you gate check
if over weight. |
Also depends on airport. At least 5 years ago, at the Air France terminal at CDG the security people had a sizer box at the checkpoint and made everyone put their carry-on inside to make sure it fit. But I didn't see that at Heathrow T3, for instance. |
Just came back. The flight to/from the US will be different than the flight and airline within Europe. My carry-on luggage fit the size and weight limits for the flight over. The flight back KLM deemed it was too heavy and I had to do a gate check the suitcase. Within Europe - it did not fight in the overheads and was gate-checked as well. Basically, only the backpack fit - and that fit under the seat - I probably could have shoved it into the overhead but it was too full to fit. |
I always travel with a 28 liter backpack and one small purse. I can travel to nearly any climate, anywhere with my set up, year round and never worry about checking or gate checking my bag. If I need to I can even fit my purse into the back pack. And no, I'm not wearing weird hiking-style clothes. Everything I own is designer (dior, louboutin, burberry etc). |
Which backpack do you use? I have a 25-liter Osprey and I do love it - but packing it and using it annoy me for longer trips - I have to take everything out, it packs "stacking style" and doesn't open all the way so I'm constantly taking things out to get to what I want. I do love its webbing and fit for my back. On my most recent trip - when it was full - it didn't fit in the tiny overhead but did fit under the seat. How do you keep your Dior, burberry from wrinkling and looking good while you travel? |
NP here. Take a look at the Peak Design 30L for a similar sized backpack that has a ton of features and open up fully. |
DP, but packing cubes. |
I think this really just depends on the plane. |
